**🍜 Must-Try Local Dishes** Kaiyuan's food scene is defined by its hearty, rustic flavors. Start with the famous Kaiyuan cold noodles, a tangy and spicy dish served with shredded cucumber and a sesame-based sauce, typically priced at 8 to 12 yuan per bowl. Another staple is the grilled river fish, marinated in local herbs and cooked over charcoal, available at many street stalls for around 30 to 50 yuan. For a quick snack, try the fried dough sticks (youtiao) dipped in soy milk, a classic breakfast combo sold for under 5 yuan. **🏮 Old Town Street Eats** The narrow alleys of Kaiyuan's Old Town, especially around Xinhua Street, are packed with food stalls from morning until late evening. Look for vendors selling steamed buns with pork and cabbage filling at 2 yuan each, and skewers of spicy tofu skin for 1 yuan per stick. The best time to visit is between 5 PM and 8 PM when the evening market kicks off. Bring small cash notes, as many stalls do not accept mobile payments. **🥟 Breakfast Spots Locals Love** For an authentic start to the day, head to the breakfast stalls near the Kaiyuan Railway Station on Zhanqian Road. A popular option is the rice noodle soup with pickled vegetables, served from 6 AM to 9 AM for about 7 yuan. Another favorite is the egg pancake (jidan bing) with scallions, cooked fresh on a griddle for 5 yuan. Arrive before 8 AM to avoid the rush of commuters. **🍲 Sit-Down Restaurants** If you prefer a proper meal, try Laojie Fandian on Renmin Road, known for its braised pork belly and claypot rice, with mains ranging from 25 to 45 yuan. Another reliable choice is Xiangwei Yuan on Jiefang Street, which specializes in spicy hotpot and offers a two-person set for around 80 yuan. Both places are open daily from 11 AM to 9 PM and fill up quickly on weekends, so call ahead for a table. **🌙 Evening Food Streets** When the sun sets, the night market on Guangming Street comes alive with sizzling grills and sweet treats. Try the roasted sweet potatoes for 6 yuan, or the candied hawthorn skewers (tanghulu) for 5 yuan. For something more filling, grab a bowl of lamb soup with flatbread for 15 yuan. The market runs from 6 PM to 11 PM, and it's a great spot to mingle with locals. **💰 Budget and Payment Tips** Street food in Kaiyuan is very affordable, with most snacks costing between 2 and 15 yuan. A full meal at a casual restaurant will set you back 20 to 50 yuan per person. While larger restaurants accept WeChat Pay and Alipay, smaller stalls prefer cash, so keep 50 to 100 yuan in small bills. Tipping is not customary anywhere in the city. **🚌 Getting Around for Food** Most food areas are within walking distance of each other in the city center, but you can also take local buses for 1 yuan per ride. Bus lines 3 and 7 stop near the Old Town and Guangming Street night market. Taxis start at 6 yuan and are easy to hail, though they can be scarce during peak dinner hours. Renting a shared bike for 1 yuan per 30 minutes is another convenient option. **🍽️ Where to Start Your Food Tour** Begin your culinary journey at the intersection of Xinhua Street and Renmin Road, where you'll find a cluster of well-known stalls and small eateries. From there, wander north toward the Old Town for street snacks, then loop back to Guangming Street for dinner. Allow at least three hours to sample a variety of dishes without feeling rushed. Weekday evenings are less crowded than weekends, giving you more time to chat with vendors.
