**🍽️ Where to Start** Begin your culinary tour in the heart of downtown on James Street North, where the city's food renaissance is most visible. This stretch is packed with eateries, from casual cafes to upscale bistros, and it's also home to the famous Hamilton Farmers' Market at 35 York Boulevard, open Tuesday to Saturday. For a first taste, grab a wood-fired pizza at Bread Bar on Locke Street, but save room for more. **🍜 Must-Try Dishes** Don't leave without trying the shawarma poutine at La Luna Express on King Street East, a local twist on two classics. For a taste of the city's Portuguese influence, order the piri-piri chicken at Churrasqueira Lisboa on Barton Street, where a half chicken with fries costs around $15. And for dessert, the butter tart at The Cannon on Cannon Street East is a sweet, flaky local icon. **🏘️ Hidden Neighborhood Gems** Venture to the Westdale Village neighborhood, where you'll find the family-run Charred Chicken on King Street West, serving juicy rotisserie chicken with a side of rice and salad for under $12. In the east end, the Ottawa Street BIA is a foodie haven, especially for its Caribbean spots like Island Flavours, where the oxtail is a weekend favorite. These areas offer a more local, less touristy vibe than downtown. **🌮 Street Food Stops** For a quick bite, head to the Hamilton Farmers' Market and sample the empanadas at the Argentine stall, which cost about $5 each and come with a spicy chimichurri. On weekends, food trucks line the waterfront at Pier 8, offering everything from tacos to lobster rolls, with most items in the $8 to $15 range. Check the city's event calendar for the monthly 'Food Truck Frenzy' at Gage Park in the summer. **💵 Budget Bites** Eating well in Hamilton doesn't have to break the bank. At the Hess Village area, you can grab a slice of pizza at Bronzies for just $3.50, or a hearty falafel wrap at the Syrian Kitchen on King William Street for $8. For a full meal under $10, head to the Chinese restaurants on Cannon Street, where lunch specials like ginger beef with rice are served daily until 3 p.m. **🍷 Evening Dining Spots** As the sun sets, book a table at The Mule on John Street North, known for its creative tacos and extensive tequila list, with mains averaging $20. For a more upscale experience, try Aberdeen Tavern on Aberdeen Avenue, where the seasonal menu features local ingredients and the tasting menu runs $65 per person. If you're in the mood for Italian, don't miss the handmade pasta at Mezcal on James Street North, where the ambiance is as delightful as the food. **🚌 Getting Around** Hamilton's food neighborhoods are best explored by car or bike, but the HSR bus system can get you between downtown and the east end for $3.25 per ride. If you're driving, be aware that parking meters on James Street North are free after 6 p.m. and on Sundays. For a fun option, rent a bike from the city's bike share program and pedal along the waterfront trail, which connects several food hotspots.
