Brightmore Mystery?

Question

So I was at Brightmore Reserve last week, took my dog for a walk. It's a pretty decent park, actually. Lots of trees, good for Frisbee, you know the drill. But, I stumbled upon this weird little stone structure tucked away near the creek. Looked ancient, almost like a tiny, overgrown ruin. Couldn't find anything online about it. Anyone know what that thing is? Seriously curious...

the stone thing near the creek is prob the old grotto from the 1920s when that whole gully was part of a private estate. the family that owned it built a little fernery and water feature down there, council absorbed it when they bought the land up in the 60s. most of it got swallowed by lantana but you can still see the arched bit if you push through. worth a look after rain when teh creek's actually running, otherwise it just looks like a pile of rocks

There's a decent chance what you found is one of the old WWI memorial cairns. A few of those went up around the north shore in the early 20s, and when the land got subdivided and handed to council some were left where they stood rather than relocated. The one behind Brightmore sits low and mossy so it reads more like a ruin than a monument. If it's roughly waist high with a flat top and a plaque recess that's been weathered smooth, that's probably it rather than the grotto people keep mentioning.

yeah that bit of bush used to be a tip site back in the day, my grandad reckoned they dumped all sorts down that gully in the 50s. so whatever stones you saw might just be rubble from an old retaining wall that got swallowed up. either way dont go poking around the creek barefoot after rain, heaps of broken glass still comes up

swenja · Answer

its just an old stormwater outlet from the 30s mate, the council heritage listing calls it a "grotto" but it was never anything fancy. i walk my kelpie past it every arvo and the thing floods whenever we get a decent downpour. why are you asking on
