Sydney Sushi Showdown?

Question

So I'm heading to Kami Japanese Restaurant near Circular Quay next week. Heard it's amazing, but the menu is HUGE. Any recommendations on must-try dishes from someone who's been? I wanna avoid the tourist traps and get the real deal. I'm thinking of ordering a bunch of smaller plates to sample. Hopefully, I don't end up ordering too much... last time I went to a Japanese place in @Tokyo, I swear I nearly exploded!

Yeah, that menu is overwhelming the first time. I'd focus on the specials board if they have one up, it's usually where the best seasonal stuff lives. The kingfish sashimi with yuzu dressing is a standout when it's available, clean and punchy without being heavy.

For smaller plates, the nasu miso (eggplant) is a sleeper hit, it's rich and caramelized and works well between bites of raw fish. Just order a few things, see how you feel, and flag down a waiter for round two. The staff there are pretty good about steering you right if you tell them you want variety.

Their chirashi bowls are fantastic. Seriously, so fresh and vibrant. Also, don't sleep on their yakitori, get a variety! And if you're feeling adventurous, try the uni (sea urchin), if it's on the menu. You'll probably want to pace yourself though; Japanese restaurants often pack a lot of flavor into smaller portions than you might be used to. Enjoy!

Skip the big set menus and go straight for the aburi salmon nigiri. They torch it tableside and the miso glaze is spot on. For smaller plates, the soft shell crab roll is a solid bet, and the agedashi tofu comes out perfectly crispy every time I've been there. Just grab a seat at the counter if you can, you'll see the kitchen working and it helps you pace yourself so you don't end up in a food coma.

honestly, just get the chawanmushi to start. it's silky and has a subtle dashi flavor that most places mess up but they nail it. then go for the sushi platter for one, it's like 12 pieces and covers all the classics without the menu overwhelm. if you're still hungry after that, the grilled mackerel is a sleeper hit and way better value than the fancy rolls. the place gets loud around 7pm so aim for 6 or 8:30 if you want a chill vibe

melissa · Answer

u gotta try the iberico pork belly skewers if they have em, they're not on the main menu but it's a hidden gem that melts in ur mouth. also the tempura mix is way better than most places, super light and not greasy at all
