**🏛️ Start at the Museum** Begin your visit at the Malatya Museum (Kernek Meydanı, Battalgazi), which reopened in 2021 after extensive renovations. It houses artifacts from the Neolithic site of Arslantepe, including the famous swords and the royal tomb, and entry costs 50 TL (2026). The museum is open daily from 9:00 to 17:00, and it's a 10-minute walk from the city center. **🏺 Explore Ancient Arslantepe** A 15-minute drive from the center brings you to Arslantepe Mound, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2021. This 6,000-year-old settlement was home to one of the world's earliest known palaces and state societies. The on-site museum displays replicas of the famous swords and seals, and the entrance fee is 40 TL. Guided tours in English are available on weekends for 100 TL per person. **🕌 Visit Historic Mosques** The Great Mosque (Ulu Cami) in Battalgazi district dates back to the 13th century and features a striking Seljuk-style portal. Nearby, the 14th-century Silahtar Mustafa Pasha Mosque is known for its intricate stonework. Both are active places of worship, so dress modestly and avoid prayer times. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. **🍑 Taste the Famous Apricots** Malatya produces 80% of the world's dried apricots, and a visit to the Apricot Market (Kayısı Pazarı) in the city center is a must. Here you can sample dried apricots, apricot kernel sweets, and even apricot coffee. Prices range from 100 TL per kilo for standard dried apricots to 300 TL for premium organic varieties. The market is busiest on Saturday mornings, so go early for the best selection. **🥘 Savor Local Cuisine** Don't miss the chance to try Malatya's signature dish, kayısı kebabı, a sweet and savory kebab made with apricots and meat, at restaurants like Cemil Usta (Yeni Cami Mahallesi, Atatürk Cad. No: 45). For a quick bite, try the local analı kızlı soup at Şire Pazarı, a historic market area. A full meal typically costs 150 to 250 TL per person. Most restaurants open around noon and stay open until 10 PM. **🛍️ Shop the Bazaars** The Bedesten, a 15th-century covered market in the old town, is perfect for picking up handmade copperware and textiles. Haggling is expected, so start at half the asking price. For something more modern, the Malatya Park AVM (Battalgazi) offers international brands and a food court. The Bedesten is open daily from 9:00 to 19:00, while the mall stays open until 10 PM. **🌳 Relax in Green Spaces** Escape the summer heat at Turgut Özal Nature Park, a large green space with walking trails, picnic areas, and a small lake. It's free to enter and open from 8:00 to 22:00. For a more central spot, the Beylerderesi Park offers shaded benches and tea gardens along the river. Both are popular with locals in the late afternoon. **🚌 Getting Around** Malatya's public transport includes buses and minibuses (dolmuş) that cover most of the city. A single ride costs 15 TL (2026), and you can pay with a Malatya Kart, available at kiosks near major stops. Taxis are metered, with a starting fare of 20 TL. For day trips to Arslantepe or other nearby sites, consider hiring a car or joining a guided tour.
