🍑 Apricot Capital Essentials
Malatya is famous for its apricots, and you'll find them everywhere from fresh fruit stands to dried apricot shops. Visit the Malatya Apricot Research Institute (Kayısı Araştırma Enstitüsü) in Battalgazi to learn about the varieties, then buy dried apricots at the central market, Malatya Sebze Hali, where prices range from 80 to 150 TL per kilo. For a sweet treat, try apricot delight (kayısı lokumu) at Tatlıcı Hacı Baba, a historic shop at Saray Mahallesi, Şehit Hamit Fendoğlu Caddesi No: 12, with a box costing around 100 TL.

🍢 Street Food Stalls
The streets around Malatya's central Çarşı (bazaar) are packed with street food stalls. Look for içli köfte (stuffed bulgur balls) sold for about 10 to 15 TL each, and çiğ köfte (raw meatless köfte) wraps for 20 TL. A standout stall is Çiğ Köfteci Ali Usta at Saray Mahallesi, Atatürk Caddesi, open from 10:00 to 20:00. Don't miss the simit (sesame bagel) carts near the Malatya Gar (train station) in the mornings, where a fresh simit costs just 5 TL.

🍽️ Traditional Restaurants
For a sit-down meal of Malatya's classic dishes, head to Kebapçı Hacı Usta at Saray Mahallesi, Şehit Hamit Fendoğlu Caddesi No: 45. Their specialty is Malatya kebabı (a lamb kebab with eggplant and tomato), priced around 120 TL per plate, and they're open daily from 11:00 to 22:00. Another reliable choice is Yeşilyurt Sofrası at Yeşilyurt Merkez, İnönü Caddesi No: 78, where a full meal for two costs about 250 TL. Try the analı kızlı (a bulgur and meatball soup) and the kuru fasulye (white bean stew).

🍲 Local Specialties
Malatya is known for its unique dishes like kayısı kebabı (apricot kebab), a sweet and savory mix of lamb and dried apricots, available at specialty restaurants such as Kayısı Diyarı at Battalgazi, İnönü Caddesi No: 101, for about 150 TL. Another must-try is Malatya tava (a fried meat and potato dish), served at many local eateries like Tava Dünyası at Yeşilyurt, Atatürk Bulvarı No: 22, for 90 TL. For dessert, try the apricot-stuffed kadayıf at Tatlıcı Hacı Baba, priced at 80 TL per portion.

🍵 Breakfast Spots
Start your day with a traditional Turkish breakfast at Serpme Kahvaltı Evi at Saray Mahallesi, Cumhuriyet Caddesi No: 33, where a spread for two costs around 200 TL and includes local cheeses, olives, and fresh bread. The place opens at 8:00 and fills up by 9:30 on weekends, so arrive early. For a quicker option, try the börek (pastry) shops near the Malatya Bus Terminal (Otogar), such as Börekçi Hasan at Otogar Yanı, where a slice of su böreği (layered cheese pastry) is 15 TL.

🌙 Evening Dining
For dinner, the area around Kernek Square (Kernek Meydanı) comes alive with restaurants and cafes. Try Köfteci Ramiz at Kernek Meydanı No: 5, known for its grilled köfte at 80 TL per plate, open until 23:00. Another evening favorite is the fish restaurants along the Horata Stream, such as Horata Balık Evi at Horata Deresi Yanı, where a fresh trout dinner costs about 120 TL. Many places also serve local wine, including the Malatya vineyards' products.

💰 Budget Eating Tips
Malatya is an affordable city for food lovers. A typical street meal like a dürüm (wrap) or lahmacun costs between 20 and 40 TL, while a sit-down lunch at a local lokanta (canteen) is around 50 to 70 TL. Look for the daily fixed menus (günün menüsü) at places like Lokanta Hacı Baba at Saray Mahallesi, Atatürk Caddesi No: 18, where you get soup, a main, and dessert for 60 TL. Avoid touristy areas near the bus station and explore the side streets of the bazaar for the best value.

🛒 Markets and Food Halls
The Malatya Central Market (Merkez Pazar) on Saray Mahallesi, Pazaryeri Sokak, is the best place to sample local produce, cheeses, and dried fruits. It's open daily from 7:00 to 19:00, except Sundays. For a modern food hall experience, visit the Malatya Park AVM food court at Yeşilyurt, İnönü Caddesi No: 150, which has a mix of local and international chains, with meals starting at 40 TL. Don't leave without trying the fresh gözleme (stuffed flatbread) from the market stalls, priced at 20 TL.

Skip the sit-down places for analı kızlı, the version at the tiny lokanta tucked inside the çarşı near the old bedesten beats most restaurants and runs about 45 TL

worth flagging that the Apricot Research Institute is basically a working station, not a visitor attraction. i showed up on a weekday and got a shrug at the gate, no tour, nothing in English. if you just want to see orchards and taste a few varieties, the growers' stalls on the road toward Yazıhan are a much better use of an afternoon.

kayısılı kadayıf at the bazaar, get it warm

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

good itinerary overall. one thing missing: the apricot season runs july into early august, and if u hit it right the fresh kayısı from roadside stalls near Darende road beat anything dried. also try the kayısılı kebab at a decent ocakbaşı, sweet & savory, weirdly works

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

the beylerderesi riverside walk is nicer at dusk than midday, and the çay bahçesi near hürriyet meydanı does a decent cheap breakfast if u skip hotel food
