Many attractions in Pingtung are cash-only, so carry enough Taiwanese dollars. The sun can be intense year-round, so pack sunscreen and a hat. Learn a few phrases in Taiwanese Hokkien or Hakka, as many locals in rural areas speak these languages more than Mandarin. Finally, check the weather before heading to the mountains, as typhoons can disrupt travel from July to September.
