**🕌 Explore Old Town** Start your visit in the old town, where coral-block buildings and Ottoman-era houses line narrow streets near the main souq. The area around the Grand Mosque, on Sharia Al-Matar, is especially atmospheric in the early morning. Entry is free, but dress modestly and ask before photographing locals. The souq itself opens around 8 AM and closes for a long midday break, reopening from 5 PM to 9 PM. **🏖️ Relax on the Beaches** Port Sudan's best public beach is the Red Sea coast at Coral Beach, about 10 km north of the center along the road to the port. The water is calm and warm year-round, with average temperatures around 28°C in winter and 32°C in summer. There are no lifeguards, so swim with caution and avoid the rocky areas near the shipping lanes. Local families often gather on Fridays, so weekdays are quieter. **🤿 Dive the Red Sea** The diving around Port Sudan is world-class, with vibrant coral reefs and wrecks like the Umbria, a Italian cargo ship sunk in 1940 near Wingate Reef. Several dive centers, including Red Sea Diving and Sudan Dive, offer day trips from the port for around $80 to $120, including equipment and lunch. The best visibility is from March to May and September to November. Book at least a day ahead, as boats fill up quickly on weekends. **🐠 Visit the Fish Market** The central fish market near the harbor is a lively spot to see the day's catch, from snapper to kingfish. It's busiest from 6 AM to 9 AM when fishermen bring in their haul. You can buy fresh fish and have it grilled at nearby stalls for a small fee, usually around 2,000 to 3,000 Sudanese pounds. It's a great place for photography, but be prepared for strong smells and crowds. **🏛️ Discover Local Museums** The Port Sudan Museum, located on Sharia Al-Nil in the city center, houses a small but interesting collection of artifacts from the Beja and Nubian cultures, as well as maritime history. It's open from 9 AM to 1 PM and 4 PM to 7 PM, except Fridays. Entry costs about 1,000 Sudanese pounds. The nearby Cultural Center often hosts art exhibitions and traditional music performances in the evenings. **⛵ Take a Boat Trip** For a different perspective, take a boat trip to one of the nearby islands, such as Talla Talla or Mukawwar, which offer pristine beaches and excellent snorkeling. Trips can be arranged at the harbor for around $50 to $100 per person, depending on the duration and group size. Most trips leave in the morning and return by late afternoon. Bring sunscreen, water, and a hat, as there is little shade on the islands. **🍽️ Taste Local Cuisine** Port Sudan's food scene blends Sudanese, Egyptian, and Red Sea influences. Try fresh seafood at restaurants like Al-Fanar or Sea View, where a grilled fish platter for two costs about 8,000 to 12,000 Sudanese pounds. For a quick bite, street vendors sell falafel and shawarma near the main bus station for under 1,000 pounds. Most restaurants open for lunch from 12 PM to 3 PM and dinner from 7 PM to 10 PM. **🚌 Getting Around Town** Port Sudan is spread out, so you'll likely rely on taxis or minibuses. Taxis are plentiful but have no meters, so agree on a fare before you get in; a short trip within the center should cost around 2,000 to 3,000 Sudanese pounds. Minibuses run fixed routes for about 500 pounds but can be crowded. For day trips to the beaches or dive sites, hiring a private car for the day costs around 20,000 to 30,000 pounds.
