**🏛️ Explore the Historic Core** Start at the Plaza de Armas, where the Cusco Cathedral (open 10am-6pm, entry 25 soles) and the Church of the Society of Jesus (10am-6pm, 20 soles) anchor the city's Spanish colonial heart. Just off the plaza, the Qorikancha (Sun Temple) combines Inca stonework with a Dominican convent; entry is 15 soles and it's open 8:30am-5:30pm. For a deeper dive, the Museo Inka on Calle Ataúd charges 10 soles and displays mummies and textiles. Insider tip: buy the Boleto Turístico (130 soles for 10 sites) if you plan to visit multiple attractions, as it covers many of the museums and ruins around town. **🏞️ Hike the Inca Trail** The classic four-day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu requires permits that sell out months in advance, especially for the 2026 season. Book through a licensed operator like Alpaca Expeditions or Llama Path; prices start around $650 and include guides, porters, and meals. For a shorter option, the two-day Inca Trail or the one-day hike from Km 104 are good alternatives. Remember to acclimatize in Cusco for at least two days before starting any trek. **🚂 Day Trip to Machu Picchu** Most visitors take the train from Poroy (20 minutes from Cusco) or Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes, then a bus up to the ruins. PeruRail and Inca Rail offer several daily departures; round-trip tickets cost from $150 to $300 depending on class. Entrance to Machu Picchu is timed and must be booked online in advance (152 soles for adults). Insider advice: book the first bus up (5:30am) to beat the crowds and catch sunrise over the citadel. **🌄 Discover Sacred Valley** The Sacred Valley towns of Pisac, Ollantaytambo, and Chinchero are easily reached by colectivo or private tour. Pisac's Sunday market is famous, but the Tuesday and Thursday markets are less crowded and equally colorful. The Ollantaytambo fortress (entry with Boleto Turístico) offers stunning views and is a good spot to catch the afternoon light. For a unique experience, visit the weaving cooperative in Chinchero to see traditional textile techniques. **🍽️ Taste Local Flavors** Cusco's food scene goes beyond the tourist trail. Try chicha de jora (fermented corn beer) at a picantería like La Chomba on Calle Tullumayo, where a set lunch costs around 15 soles. For high-end Andean cuisine, book a table at Chicha by Gastón Acurio (Plaza Regocijo 261, mains 40-60 soles). Don't miss the San Pedro Market, open daily from 6am to 6pm, for fresh juices and local cheeses. Insider tip: many restaurants offer a menú del día (set lunch) for 10-15 soles, available from noon to 3pm. **🎨 Browse San Blas** The San Blas neighborhood is Cusco's bohemian quarter, filled with artisan workshops, galleries, and cafes. Walk up Calle Hatun Rumiyoc to see the famous 12-angled stone, then continue to Plaza San Blas for jewelry and pottery shops. The Museo de Arte Precolombino (Plaza Nazarenas, entry 20 soles) houses a fine collection of pre-Inca art. Insider tip: visit on a weekday morning to avoid crowds and catch artisans at work. **🌙 Experience Nightlife** Cusco's nightlife centers around the Plaza de Armas and Calle Plateros. For a relaxed evening, try a pisco sour at Limbus Restobar (Calle Clorinda Matto de Turner 3), which has a terrace with city views. If you're looking for live music, the Norton Rat's Tavern (Plaza de Armas 79) hosts rock bands most nights. Insider tip: many bars offer happy hour from 6pm to 9pm with two-for-one cocktails. **🎉 Join Local Festivals** Cusco's calendar is packed with festivals, and 2026 is no exception. Inti Raymi, the Festival of the Sun, takes place on June 24 and features a spectacular reenactment at Sacsayhuamán; buy tickets months in advance (from $80). Corpus Christi in June brings colorful processions and local food to the plaza. For a smaller event, the Cusco Beer Festival in October showcases craft brews from the region. Insider tip: check the Municipal Tourism Office for a full schedule of events during your visit.
