Things to Do in Amsterdam (2026): Ask Locals Amsterdam

**🚲 Start with a Bike Tour** Amsterdam is a city built for cycling, and a guided bike tour is the best way to get your bearings. Mike's Bike Tours (Brouwersgracht 32) offers a 3-hour city tour for €32.50, including a canal boat ride, and runs daily from 10:00. You'll learn the unwritten rules of Dutch cycling, like yielding to trams and using hand signals. **🏛️ Museums Without the Madness** The Rijksmuseum (Museumstraat 1) and Van Gogh Museum (Museumplein 6) are unmissable, but book timed entry online at least a week ahead to skip the queues. For a quieter art fix, visit the Stedelijk Museum's modern collection or the intimate Rembrandt House Museum (Jodenbreestraat 4). Go early on weekdays, right at opening, to enjoy the galleries with fewer crowds. **🚤 Canal Cruises and Alternatives** A classic canal cruise is a must, but skip the big tourist boats and try a smaller electric boat like Those Dam Boat Guys, which offers 90-minute small-group tours for €27.50. For a more active option, rent a pedal boat from Canal Motorboats (Westerdoksplein 20) and explore the canals at your own pace. Sunset cruises are especially magical, with the city lights reflecting on the water. **🌷 Seasonal Highlights** If you visit between late March and mid-May, the Keukenhof Gardens are in full bloom, and you can take a direct bus from Amsterdam Centraal (€34.50 including entry). In 2026, the Flower Parade runs from late April, so check the exact dates. For a year-round floral fix, the Amsterdam Tulip Museum (Prinsengracht 116) is a small, charming stop. **🍰 Taste Local Favorites** Try a traditional Dutch pancake at Pancakes Amsterdam (Berendstraat 8 or Prinsengracht 191), where a basic pancake costs around €10. For a savory snack, head to a herring stand like Frens Haringhandel (Koningsplein 10) and order a broodje haring with pickles and onions. Finish with a stroopwafel fresh off the iron at the Albert Cuyp Market (open Mon-Sat). **🏘️ Hidden Neighborhoods** Venture beyond the canal ring to the Jordaan, a former working-class area now filled with indie boutiques and cozy brown cafes. For a more offbeat vibe, explore the NDSM Wharf, a former shipyard turned creative hub, accessible by the free ferry from behind Centraal Station. Don't miss the street art and the weekly flea market on Sundays. **🚋 Getting Around Smartly** Buy an OV-chipkaart or use the GVB app for unlimited tram, bus, and metro rides; a 24-hour pass costs €9.00 and covers all city transport. Walking is often the fastest way between central sights, but trams are handy for longer hops like from Centraal to Museumplein. Avoid renting a car unless you're leaving the city, as parking is scarce and expensive. **🌙 Evening Entertainment** For a unique night out, catch a live jazz show at the intimate Bimhuis (Piet Heinkade 3), with tickets from €18. If you prefer a relaxed vibe, join a canal-side bar crawl in the Leidseplein area, but beware of tourist traps. For a truly local experience, book a table at a 'brown cafe' like Café 't Smalle (Egelantiersgracht 12) and sip a Dutch gin while chatting with locals.
