**🏛️ Start at Jemaa el-Fna** Begin your Marrakech journey at the famous Jemaa el-Fna square, the city's beating heart. By day, it's a bustling market with orange juice stalls and snake charmers; by night, it transforms into a massive open-air food court. Arrive around sunset to watch the smoke rise from dozens of food stalls and soak in the chaotic energy. Be prepared for persistent vendors, and keep your belongings close in the crowd. **🏞️ Explore the Majorelle Garden** Escape the medina's hustle at the Jardin Majorelle, a stunning botanical garden designed by Jacques Majorelle and later restored by Yves Saint Laurent. The vibrant blue accents and exotic plants make it a photographer's dream. It's located at Rue Yves Saint Laurent, and entry costs 150 dirhams for the garden alone, or 250 dirhams for a combined ticket with the Berber Museum. Go early, around 9:30 AM, to beat the long queues and the midday heat. **🕌 Visit the Koutoubia Mosque** The Koutoubia Mosque is Marrakech's most iconic landmark, with its 77-meter minaret visible from across the city. While non-Muslims cannot enter, the surrounding gardens offer a peaceful spot to admire the architecture and watch locals go about their day. The best views are from the esplanade on Avenue Mohammed V, especially at golden hour. It's a free attraction and a great orientation point for navigating the city. **🏰 Wander the Saadian Tombs** Hidden for centuries, the Saadian Tombs date back to the 16th century and were rediscovered in 1917. The intricate marble and stucco work in the main mausoleum is breathtaking, and the gardens are a serene escape from the medina. Located near the Kasbah Mosque, entry costs 70 dirhams. Visit late afternoon to avoid tour groups, and note that the site closes at 5 PM. **🛍️ Shop in the Souks** The souks of Marrakech are a labyrinth of narrow alleys filled with spices, textiles, lanterns, and ceramics. Start at the main entrance near Jemaa el-Fna and let yourself get lost; you'll find everything from leather goods in Souk Semmarine to traditional slippers in Souk Smata. Bargaining is expected, so start at half the asking price and negotiate with a smile. Be mindful of your route, as shopkeepers often try to guide you to their stores. **🍽️ Take a Food Tour** To truly understand Marrakech's cuisine, join a guided food tour that takes you beyond the tourist traps. Look for tours that include stops at local bakeries, street food stalls, and family-run restaurants in the medina. You'll sample everything from tanjia (a slow-cooked meat dish) to msemen (flaky pancakes) while learning about the city's culinary history. Prices vary, but expect to pay around 500 to 800 dirhams for a 3-hour tour with tastings. **🌿 Relax in a Traditional Hammam** A visit to a hammam is a quintessential Marrakech experience, offering a deep clean and relaxation. For a local experience, try the public hammam in your riad's neighborhood, which costs around 20 dirhams plus soap and scrub. For a more luxurious option, book a spa treatment at Les Bains de Marrakech or the hammam at La Mamounia, where prices start at 400 dirhams. Always bring your own towel and underwear, and expect to be scrubbed vigorously. **🚌 Getting Around the City** Marrakech is best explored on foot, especially within the medina, but for longer distances, use the city's petit taxi (small red cabs) or hop on the tourist bus. Petit taxis are metered, but always confirm the driver uses the meter or agree on a fare before starting. For day trips to the Atlas Mountains or the coast, consider hiring a private driver or joining an organized tour. The city's new tram line, set to expand by 2026, will also offer a convenient way to reach the new town.
