Secundaria Memories?

Question

I'm heading to Secundaria Federal Juan de la Barrera next week for a school exchange program. My host family keeps mentioning this legendary "lunch lady", apparently she's a local legend at the school. What's the deal with this lunch lady? Is she REALLY as good as everyone says? I'm bracing myself for some seriously spicy food, and hoping she's not *too* terrifying...

shes been feeding half of Cancun at this point, my cousins went there in the 2000s and still talk about her. the move is to get there early, like before the second bell, cause once the tortas sell out thats it. also she takes cash only and the ATM by the Oxxo on Av. Chac Mool is usually out of bills, so bring change.

oh you mean Doña Chelo? shes been at that school since like the 90s, everyone knows her. the food is legit but yeah its spicy, her chilaquiles will wreck you if you're not used to habanero. she's not scary at all tho, she'll probably just laugh and call you "mi rey" while piling more food on your plate.

brigitta · Answer

Doña Chelo's real talent is her salsa verde, not the heat. She keeps a mild batch under the counter for the exchange students if you just ask her straight up. Also try her tortas de pierna on Fridays, that's the day she actually switches it up.

the "terrifying" thing is mostly a bit, she just has zero patience for kids who waste food. i went there for intercambio in 2019 and the real heads up is the schedule, she only does the good stuff during primer receso around 10:30, by segundo receso its just whatever's left. bring coins, like 50 pesos in cambio, cause she runs a cash box not a register and hates breaking big bills. also learn to say "poquito picante" or she'll default to full habanero and you'll be crying at the fountain by the canchas
