Alustil's Secret?

Question

I stumbled upon Alustil while wandering through a back alley in Kuala Lumpur, completely by accident. The place was tucked away, almost hidden, but the craftsmanship spilling out onto the street, intricate carvings on a massive teak table, the gleam of polished ebony, drew me in. The air inside smelled faintly of sandalwood and varnish. The owner, a wizened old man with hands like knotted tree roots, barely spoke English but his smile was welcoming. He showed me pieces older than my grandparents, each with its own story. My question is: What's the story behind the most unusual piece of furniture they've ever created or restored? I'd love to hear some of the history behind these incredible pieces.

yeah the Jalan Maarof Alustil is legit, its in Bangsar not some back alley. but the old man thing kinda tracks, the founder's family has been in the wood trade since like the 70s i think. the stuff people always ask about is a restored colonial-era daybed they did years back, apparently it came out of a crumbling house in Taiping and took them almost 8 months to bring back. ngl the stories are half the appeal, the price tags are the other half lol.

I think you might be mixing up a couple of places. Alustil isn't in a KL back alley, it's a furniture and interior shop on Jalan Maarof in Bangsar, and the teak and ebony pieces you're describing sound more like the antique shops along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman or the workshops in Pudu. If it's carved hardwood you're after, the real gems are in Pudu and along Jalan Sultan, where Chinese-Malaysian carpenters have been restoring nyonya pieces for decades. Not trying to nitpick, just so you don't go hunting down the wrong street next time.

The piece that gets talked about most among regulars is a Chinese altar table they brought back from a shophouse in Ipoh, apparently it had been sitting under a leaking roof for years and the top was half gone. What made it tricky was the joinery, no nails, just pegged mortise and tenon, so they had to match the replacement wood by grain and age rather than just swapping out a panel. Took them close to a year I heard, and they left some of the water stains visible on purpose. If you're into that side of things, the shophouses along Jalan Sultan are worth a slow walk, some of the carpenters there will chat with you if you're not in a rush.
