**🍲 Must-Try Local Dishes** Start with Tuo Zaafi, a thick millet or corn dough served with green leafy stew and often meat or fish. Another staple is Waakye, rice and beans cooked with millet leaves, usually eaten for breakfast with spaghetti, egg, and shito. Fufu with light soup or groundnut soup is a dinner favorite, and you will find it in almost every local eatery. For a quick bite, try Koko, a fermented millet porridge, sold in the mornings at roadside stalls. **🍽️ Popular Restaurants** The Jeyads Restaurant at 1st Avenue, opposite the Central Mosque, serves generous plates of rice and stew from 10 AM to 10 PM, with mains around 30 to 50 GHS. Big Milly's Backyard on Kpalsi Road is a relaxed spot for grilled chicken and pizza, open daily from noon to 11 PM, with prices from 40 to 80 GHS. For a taste of the north, try Oasis Lounge on Sagnarigu Road, known for its grilled guinea fowl and jollof, open 11 AM to midnight, mains 50 to 90 GHS. **🌯 Street Food Stalls** The Tamale Central Market area buzzes with vendors selling rice and stew, fried yam, and kelewele from early morning until late evening. At the Aboabo Market, you can grab a bowl of waakye for 5 to 10 GHS, served with gari and shito. In the evenings, head to the Lamashegu junction for grilled corn, khebab, and soya khebab, typically 2 to 5 GHS per stick. Most stalls operate from 6 AM to 9 PM, but the busiest times are around 7 AM and 6 PM. **🥘 Neighborhood Eats** In the Vittin neighborhood, small chop bars along the Vittin Road serve local dishes like banku and okro stew for 15 to 25 GHS. The Kalpohin area has a cluster of eateries near the Kalpohin Market, where you can find rice balls with groundnut soup for about 20 GHS. For a more upscale vibe, the Sagnarigu district offers several air-conditioned restaurants with both local and continental menus, with mains from 40 to 70 GHS. Each neighborhood has its own character, so explore beyond the city center. **💰 Budget and Prices** Street food is very affordable, with most snacks and small meals costing between 2 and 10 GHS. A filling plate of rice and stew at a local chop bar will set you back 15 to 25 GHS, while a restaurant meal ranges from 30 to 90 GHS. Bottled water is around 2 GHS, and a soft drink is 5 GHS. For the best value, eat where the locals eat, and always carry small change. **🕒 Best Times to Eat** Breakfast in Tamale is typically from 6 to 9 AM, when you can find koko, waakye, and fried yam with shito. Lunch runs from noon to 2 PM, and many chop bars serve their freshest food during this window. Dinner starts around 6 PM and can go until 10 PM, with grilled meats and fufu being popular choices. Note that some street stalls close on Fridays for prayers, so plan accordingly. **🚕 Getting Around** The easiest way to reach food spots is by taxi or tricycle, known locally as 'yellow-yellow'. A short trip within the city center costs about 5 to 10 GHS, while longer rides to neighborhoods like Sagnarigu or Kalpohin may be 15 to 20 GHS. You can also use ride-hailing apps like Uber or Bolt, which are available in Tamale. Always agree on the fare before starting your journey if you are not using an app. **🌙 Evening Food Scene** After sunset, the night market at the Tamale Central Market comes alive with vendors selling grilled tilapia, kebabs, and fried rice. The area around the Tamale Stadium also has a row of food trucks and stalls from 7 PM to midnight, offering everything from shawarma to local dishes. For a sit-down evening meal, try the Purple Pub on Bolgatanga Road, open until 11 PM, with a mix of Ghanaian and international dishes. Prices for evening street food are similar to daytime, around 5 to 20 GHS per item.
