**🏛️ Start at the Historic Water Town** Begin your visit in the old city center around Cangqiao Straight Street (Cangqiao Zhijie), a canal-lined lane with Ming and Qing dynasty architecture. This area is free to explore and gives you an immediate sense of Shaoxing's canal culture. Arrive early to avoid crowds and catch the morning light on the stone bridges. **🏠 Visit Lu Xun's Former Residence** Lu Xun, one of China's most influential modern writers, was born here in 1881. The residence at 35 Luxun Middle Road is now a museum with period furniture and exhibits on his life. Admission is free, but you need to reserve a ticket online in advance. Plan about an hour to walk through the house and the adjacent Sanwei Bookroom. **⛵ Take a Wupeng Boat Ride** A wupeng boat is a traditional black-canopied skiff unique to Shaoxing. You can hire one at the East Lake (Donghu) scenic area for about 100 yuan per 30 minutes. The boatman rows with his feet while steering with his hands, a skill passed down for generations. The ride through the lake's sheer cliffs and caves is the most iconic Shaoxing experience. **🍶 Taste Shaoxing Yellow Wine** Shaoxing is famous for its huangjiu (yellow wine), a fermented rice wine aged for years. Visit the China Yellow Wine Museum at 571 Yangjiang Road to learn about the brewing process and sample different vintages. Tastings are included in the 30 yuan entry fee. For a deeper dive, book a tour at the nearby Guyue Longshan winery. **🥟 Eat Local Street Food** Don't leave without trying stinky tofu (choudoufu) from a street stall near the Confucius Temple on Jiefang Road. Another must-try is xiaolongbao (soup dumplings) at the old-fashioned restaurant Xianheng Hotel on Luxun Middle Road. Most snacks cost between 5 and 15 yuan. The best time for street food is late afternoon when vendors set up along the canals. **🌳 Explore East Lake Scenic Area** East Lake (Donghu) is a man-made lake created from an ancient quarry, with dramatic vertical cliffs and caves. The entrance fee is 50 yuan, and a boat ride costs an additional 40 yuan. Walk the paths along the water for free views of the rock formations. It's about 20 minutes by bus from the city center (take bus 1 or 7). **🚌 Getting Around Shaoxing** The city center is walkable, but for longer distances use the clean and cheap bus system (2 yuan per ride). Taxis start at 8 yuan, and ride-hailing apps like Didi are widely available. The Shaoxing Metro Line 1 connects the old town to the high-speed rail station and runs until 10:30 PM. Bicycles can be rented via the WeChat mini-program for 1 yuan per hour. **🌙 Evening Stroll Along the Canals** As night falls, the old town's canals are lit with red lanterns, creating a romantic atmosphere. Walk along the water from the Guangning Bridge to the Bazi Bridge (Eight-Character Bridge), a unique stone structure from the Song dynasty. Many small tea houses stay open until 10 PM, offering a quiet spot to sip local tea and watch the reflections.
