**🍜 Where to Start** Begin your culinary tour at the Gejiu Night Market on Renmin Road, open daily from 5 PM to midnight. This bustling strip is lined with stalls selling local specialties like cross-bridge rice noodles and grilled skewers. Most dishes cost between 10 and 30 yuan, making it easy to sample a variety. **🥟 Must-Try Local Dish** Gejiu is famous for its "Gejiu small pot rice noodles" (Gejiu xiaoguo mixian), a spicy and sour broth served with minced pork, peanuts, and fresh herbs. Head to Old Street Rice Noodle at 88 Jiefang Road for an authentic bowl for just 12 yuan. The shop opens at 7 AM and often sells out by noon. **🍢 Street Food Favorites** Don't miss the grilled tofu skewers at Sister Chen's Stall on Zhongshan Road, where a skewer costs only 2 yuan. Another highlight is the fried potato cakes (tudou bing) sold near the Gejiu Bus Station, crispy on the outside and soft inside, priced at 5 yuan each. Both stalls are busiest in the late afternoon. **🍲 Best Evening Spots** For a sit-down dinner, try Yunnan Flavor Restaurant at 45 Jianshe Road, which serves classic dishes like steam pot chicken and wild mushroom hotpot. Mains range from 30 to 80 yuan, and the restaurant is open from 11 AM to 10 PM. For a livelier atmosphere, head to the food court on the second floor of Gejiu Department Store, where vendors serve everything from dumplings to barbecue until 9 PM. **💰 Local Prices** Most street food items cost between 2 and 15 yuan, while a full meal at a mid-range restaurant runs 40 to 80 yuan per person. Gejiu is generally cheaper than Kunming, so you can eat well on a budget. Cash is preferred at smaller stalls, but many restaurants accept WeChat Pay. **🚌 Getting Around** The city center is compact and walkable, but bus routes 1 and 2 connect major food areas like the night market and Old Street. Taxis start at 8 yuan and are easy to hail. If you're heading to the outskirts for a farm-to-table experience, consider renting a bike for about 20 yuan per day. **🍵 Hidden Gem** Tucked away on a side alley off Heping Road, Grandma Liu's Snack Shop serves handmade glutinous rice balls in ginger syrup for just 8 yuan. This family-run stall has been operating for over 20 years and is a favorite among locals. Look for the red lantern hanging outside the entrance. **🍽️ Dining Tips** Most restaurants in Gejiu close by 9 PM, so plan dinner early. Street food stalls stay open later, especially on weekends. If you have dietary restrictions, note that many dishes use pork or lard, but vegetarian options like stir-fried greens and tofu are widely available. Always carry a napkin, as some stalls don't provide them.
