Things to Do in Natal (2026): Ask Locals Natal (2026)

**🏖️ Start at Ponta Negra** Begin your trip at Ponta Negra Beach, the city's most iconic stretch of sand, framed by the Morro do Careca dune. The beach is lively all day, with beach bars like Camarões serving grilled shrimp and cold coconut water. For the best views, hike up the wooden boardwalk to the dune's base at sunset, but respect the protected area and don't climb the dune itself. **🐚 Explore Genipabu Dunes** Just 25 kilometers north of Natal, Genipabu is famous for its towering sand dunes and the thrilling dune buggy rides that slide down their steep slopes. You can choose between the 'safe' ride with a guide or the 'emotional' ride with more adrenaline, both costing around R$ 150 per person for 30 minutes. For a quieter experience, take a camel ride along the beach or simply walk the dunes at sunrise before the crowds arrive. **🐢 Meet Sea Turtles at Praia do Meio** At Praia do Meio, the Tamar Project runs a small but informative sea turtle conservation center, open daily from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Admission is free, though donations are welcome, and you'll see hatchlings and adult turtles in recovery tanks. The adjacent beach is a calm spot for a swim, and the center's volunteers often share stories about the turtles' journey along the Brazilian coast. **🏰 Tour Forte dos Reis Magos** The star-shaped Forte dos Reis Magos, built in 1598, guards the mouth of the Potengi River and offers panoramic views of the city and ocean. Located on a sand spit at the end of Avenida Presidente Café Filho, it's open Tuesday to Sunday from 8 AM to 4 PM, with a small entrance fee of R$ 10. Walk the ramparts and visit the tiny chapel inside, then cross the footbridge back to the mainland for a stroll along the waterfront. **🛶 Paddle the Potengi Mangroves** For a different perspective, rent a kayak or join a guided stand-up paddleboard tour through the mangroves of the Potengi River, departing from the Vila de Ponta Negra area. Tours typically last two hours and cost about R$ 80 per person, including a local guide who points out herons, crabs, and other wildlife. The best time is early morning when the water is calm and the heat is manageable. **🍽️ Taste Local Flavors** Don't leave without trying 'tapioca' from a street stall, especially the savory version with cheese and dried shrimp, which you can find at the Praia de Ponta Negra kiosks for about R$ 10. For a sit-down meal, head to Mangai, a popular restaurant at Rua Professor José Melo 55, serving regional dishes like 'carne de sol' with macaxeira. On Sundays, the Feira de Artesanato at Praia de Areia Preta offers food stalls with local sweets and fresh fruit. **🌃 Evening at Rua Chile** When the sun goes down, Rua Chile in the historic center transforms into a pedestrian-only street lined with bars and live music venues. Grab a cold beer at Boteco do Nelson and listen to forró bands that start around 9 PM, with no cover charge on weekdays. On weekends, the street gets crowded, so arrive by 8 PM to snag a table and enjoy the relaxed, local vibe. **🚌 Getting Around Natal** Natal's public bus system is cheap (R$ 4.50 per ride) but can be slow, so many visitors prefer using ride-hailing apps like Uber, which are widely available and cost around R$ 20 for a trip from Ponta Negra to the historic center. For day trips to Genipabu or Pirangi, consider renting a car or booking a tour that includes hotel pickup. The city is bike-friendly along the coast, and you can rent bicycles at several shops near Ponta Negra for about R$ 30 per day.
