**🌊 First Peoples** Long before the First Fleet arrived, the Gadigal people of the Eora nation called this harbor home for over 30,000 years. You can still feel their presence at sites like the Aboriginal Heritage Walk in the Royal Botanic Garden, which runs daily at 10:00 AM and costs $45 per adult. The rock engravings in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, about an hour north of the city, offer a more remote glimpse into their ancient culture. **⚓ Founding in 1788** On January 26, 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip raised the British flag at Sydney Cove, establishing the first European colony in Australia. The landing spot is now marked by the Museum of Sydney on the corner of Phillip and Bridge Streets, where you can see artifacts from the original settlement. For a deeper dive, walk the nearby Rocks Discovery Museum, which is free and open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. **🏛️ Convict Era Legacy** Between 1788 and 1840, Sydney served as a penal colony, and that history is etched into its oldest buildings. Hyde Park Barracks, at Queens Square, housed thousands of convicts and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with entry at $25 for adults. The nearby Susannah Place Museum in the Rocks, a row of 1844 terrace houses, shows how working-class families lived in the convict era. **🚂 Gold Rush Boom** The discovery of gold in the 1850s transformed Sydney from a penal outpost into a thriving port city. That wealth funded grand Victorian buildings like the Sydney Town Hall, completed in 1889, and the Queen Victoria Building, which opened in 1898 and now houses upscale shops. You can tour the QVB's restored interior daily from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and the Town Hall offers guided tours on Tuesdays at 10:30 AM for $15. **🌉 Federation and Growth** When Australia federated in 1901, Sydney was already a bustling metropolis of over 480,000 people. The city celebrated its new status by constructing iconic landmarks like Central Station, completed in 1906, and the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which opened in 1932 after nearly a decade of construction. You can walk across the bridge for free, or climb it with BridgeClimb for $263, and the views from the top are unmatched. **🎭 Modern Icon: Opera House** The Sydney Opera House, designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, was completed in 1973 after 14 years of construction and remains a masterpiece of modern architecture. Its distinctive sail-like roofs are a UNESCO World Heritage site, and you can take a one-hour guided tour daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with tickets starting at $43. For a budget-friendly option, grab a coffee at the Opera Bar and admire the building from the outside. **🏙️ Contemporary Sydney** In recent decades, Sydney has evolved into a global financial and cultural hub, with skyscrapers reshaping its skyline. The Barangaroo precinct, once a container terminal, is now a waterfront neighborhood with parks, restaurants, and the Crown Sydney tower, which opened in 2020. To see how the city balances old and new, stroll from Circular Quay to Barangaroo along the foreshore walk, a 3.5-kilometer path that passes historic sites and modern developments alike.
