**🥟 Empanadas: The Local Obsession** Tucuman is famous for its empanadas, and the best ones are found at El Portal, located at Avenida Aconquija 1234 in Yerba Buena. A dozen costs around 1200 pesos and they come in beef, chicken, and cheese varieties. For a quick bite, try the street stalls at Plaza Independencia, where a single empanada sells for 150 pesos. They are best enjoyed fresh and hot, usually from 11 AM to 2 PM and again from 7 PM to 10 PM. **🥩 Where to Eat Locro** Locro is a hearty stew of corn, beans, and meat, and it is a must-try in Tucuman. Head to La Leñita at Calle 24 de Septiembre 456, where a bowl costs about 800 pesos and is served with fresh bread. The dish is especially popular on national holidays, but you can find it year-round at El Rancho, Avenida Sarmiento 789, open daily from noon to 3 PM and 8 PM to 11 PM. For a budget version, try the market stalls at Mercado del Norte, where a plate goes for 500 pesos. **🍖 Asado and Parrillas** Tucuman's asado culture is strong, and Parrilla La Rueda at Avenida Belgrano 1010 is a top choice for grilled meats. A mixed grill for two costs around 2500 pesos and includes chorizo, morcilla, and ribs. Another favorite is El Quincho de Don Julio on Calle San Martín 2020, where the bife de chorizo is 1200 pesos and the atmosphere is casual. Most parrillas open for lunch from 12 PM to 3 PM and dinner from 8 PM to midnight. **🌮 Street Food and Markets** The Mercado del Norte on Calle Mendoza 600 is the best spot for street food, with stalls selling tamales, humitas, and empanadas from 8 AM to 6 PM. A tamale costs about 200 pesos and a humita around 180 pesos. For something sweet, look for the stall selling pastelitos de dulce de membrillo at 100 pesos each. On weekends, the Feria de Artesanos in Parque 9 de Julio also has food stands with similar prices. **🍷 Wine and Regional Drinks** Tucuman is known for its Torrontés wine, and you can sample it at Bodega La Rural on Avenida Perón 1500, where tastings start at 500 pesos. The region also produces excellent craft beers, with Cervecería del Norte at Calle Laprida 800 offering a flight of four for 600 pesos. For a non-alcoholic option, try the local drink called 'aloja' made from corn and honey, sold at street stalls for 150 pesos. Most bars open from 6 PM to 2 AM. **🍰 Desserts and Sweets** Tucuman's sweet tooth shines at Confitería El Molino on Calle 25 de Mayo 300, where the alfajor de maicena costs 250 pesos and is a local favorite. Another must-try is the 'quesillo con miel de caña' at Café Martínez on Avenida Aconquija 2000, priced at 400 pesos. For ice cream, head to Grido on Calle San Juan 500, where a quarter kilo is 300 pesos. These shops are open daily from 10 AM to 10 PM. **🚌 Getting Around for Food** Most food spots are concentrated in the city center, so walking is easy, but taxis are cheap at around 300 pesos for short rides. Buses like Line 1 and Line 5 connect the center to Yerba Buena for 50 pesos, running every 15 minutes from 5 AM to 11 PM. If you are heading to Mercado del Norte, take any bus along Avenida Sarmiento. Ride-hailing apps like Uber and Cabify also operate here, with fares starting at 250 pesos. **💡 Practical Food Tips** Lunch is the main meal in Tucuman, served from 12 PM to 3 PM, while dinner starts late, around 9 PM. Many restaurants close on Sundays, so plan ahead. Tipping is not mandatory but 10 percent is appreciated. Cash is king at street stalls, so carry small bills, though most sit-down places accept credit cards. Prices in 2026 are expected to rise slightly, so budget around 1500 to 3000 pesos per person for a full meal.
