**🏛️ Capitol Square Essentials** Start at the Wisconsin State Capitol (2 E Main St), open weekdays 8am to 6pm and weekends 8am to 4pm, with free guided tours hourly. The observation deck on the sixth floor offers a panoramic view of the city and lakes, and it's less crowded on weekday mornings. On Saturdays from April to November, the Dane County Farmers' Market wraps around the square from 6:15am to 1:45pm, selling cheese curds, fresh produce, and baked goods. Insider tip: arrive before 9am to avoid the crowds and grab a warm cinnamon roll from the market vendors. **🎨 Museums and Culture** The Chazen Museum of Art (750 University Ave) is free and open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm, with a strong collection of European and American art. For a quirkier experience, the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (227 State St) has a rooftop sculpture garden and free admission, though it's closed on Mondays. The Wisconsin Historical Museum (30 N Carroll St) is currently closed for renovation, so check its website for pop-up exhibits around town. Don't miss the free Allen Centennial Garden (620 Babcock Dr), a hidden gem with themed plantings and a koi pond. **🚴 Outdoor Adventures** Rent a bike from BCycle stations around downtown ($5 per 30 minutes) and ride the 12-mile Capital City Trail, which loops past Lake Monona and through Olbrich Botanical Gardens (3330 Atwood Ave, free entry, open daily 10am to 4pm). In summer, rent a kayak or paddleboard from Brittingham Boats (701 W Brittingham Pl) for about $15 per hour and explore Lake Monona. For a unique view, hike up to Picnic Point (2000 University Bay Dr), a peninsula jutting into Lake Mendota, open from 4am to 10pm. Winter visitors can snowshoe or cross-country ski on the same trails. **🍺 Craft Beer and Food** Madison's craft beer scene is anchored by places like the Great Dane Pub (123 E Doty St), which has been brewing since 1994 and offers tours on weekends. For a more modern vibe, Young Blood Beer Company (319 E Wilson St) specializes in experimental sours and stouts, with a taproom open Wednesday to Sunday. Food-wise, the Old Fashioned (25 N Pinckney St) serves classic Wisconsin supper club fare, including cheese curds and fish fry, with entrees around $15 to $25. Insider tip: the fish fry on Friday nights is a local ritual, so expect a wait after 6pm. **🎶 Music and Nightlife** The Frequency (121 W Main St) is a beloved indie music venue with shows most nights, typically $10 to $20 cover. For larger acts, the Majestic Theatre (115 King St) hosts national touring bands and has a full bar. The Orpheum Theater (216 State St) is a historic venue with ornate architecture, worth a visit even if you're just catching a film. On warm evenings, the Memorial Union Terrace (800 Langdon St) is the place to be: grab a pitcher of beer, sit by the lake, and enjoy free live music on many nights. **🚌 Getting Around** Madison is compact and walkable, but a car is handy for exploring beyond downtown. The city bus system, Madison Metro, costs $2 per ride (exact change) or $5 for a day pass, and routes cover most attractions. Bike-sharing via BCycle is popular, with stations near the Capitol and campus. Parking downtown can be expensive ($1.50 to $2 per hour in ramps), so consider using the Park and Ride lots on the outskirts and taking the bus in. **❄️ Seasonal Highlights** Summer brings free concerts on the Capitol Square every Wednesday at 7pm from June to August, plus the Art Fair on the Square in July. Fall is football season, and Badger game days transform the city; tickets can be pricey, but the tailgating around Camp Randall Stadium is an experience in itself. Winter offers ice skating at Tenney Park (1330 Sherman Ave) with rentals available, and the Frostiball celebration in January features ice sculptures and live music. Spring is maple syrup season, and local farms like Silverwood Park (77 Silverwood Cir) offer tours and tastings. **💡 Insider Tips** Many museums and attractions offer free admission on certain days, such as the Chazen on Sundays. The Madison Public Library (201 W Mifflin St) has free passes to local museums and attractions that you can check out with your library card. For cheap eats, head to State Street, where you'll find plenty of casual options under $10, like the dumplings at Ha Long Bay (1353 Williamson St). Avoid driving during UW home football games, as traffic and parking become chaotic.
