**🍳 Classic Madison Breakfasts** Start your day at Mickies Dairy Bar, 1511 Monroe Street, a 1950s-style diner near Camp Randall Stadium that serves massive scramblers and pancakes for $8 to $12. For a quicker option, try the sourdough pancakes at the Original Pancake House, 5518 University Avenue, open daily from 6:30 AM. Expect weekend waits at both spots, so arrive before 9 AM to beat the crowds. **🧀 Cheese Curds and Tavern Fare** No visit to Madison is complete without fried cheese curds, and the Old Fashioned, 23 North Pinckney Street, on Capitol Square, serves some of the best for $9. Pair them with a brandy old-fashioned at the bar, open until 2 AM on weekends. For a more local vibe, head to the Tipsy Cow, 102 King Street, where curds come with a side of garlic aioli for $10. **🌮 Food Carts on Library Mall** Library Mall, along State Street between Lake Street and Park Street, hosts a rotating lineup of food carts from 11 AM to 3 PM on weekdays. Try the pork belly tacos at Umami Ramen and Dumplings cart for $7, or the banh mi at the Bánh Mì cart for $6. Bring cash, as some carts still don't accept cards, and expect lines around noon. **🍽️ Farm-to-Table Dining** The Dane County Farmers' Market, held Saturdays on Capitol Square from 6:15 AM to 1:45 PM, is a great place to sample local produce and baked goods. For a sit-down meal, book a table at Graze, 1 South Pinckney Street, where small plates like the cheese board run $14 to $18. Reserve ahead for dinner, especially on weekends, and ask about the daily specials featuring nearby farms. **🍜 International Eats on State Street** State Street offers a world of flavors, from the spicy ramen at Umami Ramen and Dumplings, 558 State Street, for $12 to the falafel platter at Med Cafe, 306 State Street, for $10. For something heartier, try the butter chicken at Maharani Indian Restaurant, 380 West Washington Avenue, with entrees around $15. Most places are open for lunch and dinner, and many offer takeout for a quick bite. **🍺 Brewpubs and Late-Night Bites** Madison's craft beer scene pairs well with pub food, and the Great Dane Pub and Brewing Company, 123 East Doty Street, serves a popular beer-battered cod for $14 until 10 PM. For late-night eats, the Weary Traveler Freehouse, 1201 Williamson Street, keeps its kitchen open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, with dishes like the Hungarian goulash for $16. Check their websites for seasonal specials and live music schedules. **🍦 Sweet Treats and Desserts** Cool down with a scoop at Babcock Hall Dairy Store, 1605 Linden Drive, where a single cone costs $3 and the ice cream is made by UW students. For something richer, try the chocolate mousse at Nostrano, 1 South Pinckney Street, for $9, or the cupcakes at Gigi's Cupcakes, 305 State Street, for $4 each. Many dessert spots close by 9 PM, so plan your sugar fix accordingly. **💡 Practical Food Tips** Most Madison restaurants accept credit cards, but food carts and the farmers' market often prefer cash. Lunch specials are common from 11 AM to 2 PM, offering discounts of 20 to 30 percent at places like the Old Fashioned. Tipping is standard at 15 to 20 percent for table service, and many downtown spots get crowded during UW home games, so check the sports schedule before you go.
