**🏰 Castle and Royal Mile** Start at Edinburgh Castle, which opens at 9:30 AM and costs about £19.50 for adults if booked online. The Royal Mile stretches from the castle down to Holyrood Palace, and you can walk it in about 30 minutes without stops. Look for the Heart of Midlothian mosaic near St Giles' Cathedral, where locals traditionally spit for luck (though it's frowned upon now). **⛰️ Hike Arthur's Seat** Arthur's Seat is an extinct volcano in Holyrood Park that rises 251 meters above sea level. The easiest route starts from the Holyrood Palace car park and takes about 45 minutes to the top. Go early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and catch the best light over the city. Wear sturdy shoes because the path gets rocky near the summit. **🏛️ Museums and Galleries** The National Museum of Scotland on Chambers Street is free and open daily from 10 AM to 5 PM. Don't miss the rooftop terrace for panoramic views, and the Millennium Clock on Level 1 is a quirky mechanical masterpiece. For art, the Scottish National Gallery on The Mound is also free and houses works by Raeburn and Ramsay. **🍽️ Eat Like a Local** For a classic Scottish breakfast, try The Edinburgh Larder at 15 Blackfriars Street, where a full breakfast costs around £12. The Scran and Scallie in Stockbridge (1 Comely Bank Road) offers upscale pub food like steak pie and haggis, and mains run £15 to £25. If you want cheap eats, head to Mosque Kitchen on Potterrow for a hearty curry around £7. **🍺 Evening Pubs and Bars** The Sheep Heid Inn in Duddingston is one of Scotland's oldest pubs, dating back to 1360, and serves real ale from £4.50 a pint. For a modern vibe, The Devil's Advocate on Advocate's Close has a great selection of Scottish gins and whiskies. Live folk music happens most nights at Sandy Bell's on Forrest Road, and there's no cover charge. **🚶 Walk the Water of Leith** The Water of Leith Walkway runs 12 miles from Balerno to Leith, but the most scenic section is from Dean Village to Stockbridge. Start at Dean Village, a picturesque former milling village just 10 minutes from Princes Street, and follow the path to the Royal Botanic Garden. It's flat, free, and perfect for a leisurely afternoon. **🛍️ Shopping and Markets** Grassmarket hosts a weekly farmers' market every Saturday from 10 AM to 2 PM, with local produce and crafts. For independent shops, head to Victoria Street, which inspired Diagon Alley, and browse stores like Walker Slater for tweed. On Sundays, the Stockbridge Market in Jubilee Gardens is great for street food and vintage finds. **🎭 Festivals and Events** The Edinburgh Festival Fringe takes over the city every August, with thousands of shows, many free or under £10. The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo runs on Castle Esplanade in August, and tickets start around £30. In winter, the Christmas Market in East Princes Street Gardens offers mulled wine and crafts from late November.
