**🌅 Start at the Beach** Begin your visit at Lome Beach, the city's long stretch of Atlantic sand that runs along the Boulevard du Mono. Early mornings are best for a peaceful walk before the heat builds, and you'll see local fishermen hauling in their colorful pirogues. For a break, grab a coconut from one of the vendors near the Hotel du Golfe. **🏛️ Visit the National Museum** The Musee National du Togo, located on Avenue de la Presidence, offers a compact but fascinating collection of traditional masks, musical instruments, and royal artifacts. It's open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and the entry fee is about 1,000 CFA (roughly $1.70). Plan to spend an hour here before heading to the nearby Grand Marche. **🛍️ Shop at Grand Marche** The Grand Marche, the city's main market, is a bustling maze of stalls selling everything from colorful fabrics to fresh produce. Don't miss the famous Nana Benz women who sell the vibrant, patterned wax prints on the upper floors. Bargaining is expected, so start at half the quoted price and work from there. Go in the morning to avoid the worst crowds. **🕍 See the Fetish Market** The Akodessewa Fetish Market, located about 3 kilometers from the city center, is one of the largest voodoo markets in West Africa. Here you'll find dried animal parts, herbs, and talismans used in traditional rituals, and local priests can explain their purposes. It's a powerful cultural experience, but be respectful and ask before taking photos. A taxi from the center costs around 2,000 CFA. **🍴 Try Local Cuisine** For an authentic meal, head to Maquis Le Zephyr on Rue du Commerce, where you can try pate (a cornmeal dough) with grilled fish and a spicy tomato sauce. Another great spot is Chez Alice, known for its delicious mafe, a peanut stew with chicken or beef. Expect to pay about 3,000 to 5,000 CFA for a filling plate with a drink. **🌆 Explore the Independence Monument** The Monument de l'Independance, a striking concrete statue in the Place de l'Independance, commemorates Togo's freedom from French rule in 1960. It's surrounded by manicured gardens and is a popular spot for locals to relax in the evenings. The site is free to visit and best photographed at sunset when the lighting is golden. **🚌 Getting Around** The most common way to get around Lome is by motorcycle taxi, known as zemidjan, which are fast and cheap, with short rides costing around 500 CFA. For longer trips or more comfort, use a regular taxi, but agree on the fare before you get in. You can also rent a car, but traffic can be chaotic, so many visitors prefer to hire a driver for the day. **🌙 Best Evening Spots** As the sun sets, head to the beachfront bars along the Boulevard du Mono, such as Le Coco Beach, for a cold beer and fresh grilled fish. For a livelier scene, check out the nightclub at the Hotel Sarakawa, which often hosts live music and DJ sets on weekends. Alternatively, take a stroll through the Grand Marche area, where street food stalls serve up spicy brochettes and fried plantains.
