**🏯 Day 1: Ancient Core** Start at Wat Mahathat (Naresuan Road, open 8:00-18:00, entry 50 THB) to see the famous Buddha head in tree roots. Then walk five minutes to Wat Ratchaburana and Wat Phra Si Sanphet, both within the same historical park zone. Break for lunch at Pa Lek Boat Noodles on Chikun Road, where a bowl costs 50 THB. In the afternoon, explore Wat Phra Ram and Wat Lokayasutharam, then catch sunset at Wat Chaiwatthanaram (entry 50 THB, open until 18:30). **🚲 Day 2: Countryside Loop** Rent a bicycle from your guesthouse for about 50 THB per day and head east across the river to Wat Phu Khao Thong, a tall white chedi with panoramic views. Continue to Wat Thammikarat and the elephant kraal area, then loop back via Wat Maheyong. For lunch, stop at Krua Thung Thong on U Thong Road for authentic Thai dishes around 80 THB. In the late afternoon, visit the Ayutthaya Elephant Palace and Royal Kraal (entry 100 THB) before returning to town. **🛶 Day 3: River & Ruins** Take a longtail boat tour from the pier near Chan Kasem Palace (about 1,000 THB per hour for up to six people) to see the city from the water. Stop at Wat Phanan Choeng, a major temple with a giant Buddha image, then continue to Wat Phutthaisawan on the west bank. Have lunch at Baan Kao Lao on Soi 2, known for its traditional Thai set menus at 120 THB. In the afternoon, explore the Ayutthaya Historical Study Center (entry 100 THB, open 9:00-16:30) before heading to the night market for dinner. **🚌 Getting Around Town** Most travelers arrive by train from Bangkok's Krung Thep Aphiwat station, a 1.5-hour ride costing 20-300 THB depending on class. Within the island, tuk-tuks charge 50-100 THB for short hops, while motorbike taxis are 30-50 THB. Bicycles are the best way to cover the central ruins, but for outlying sites like Wat Chaiwatthanaram, a tuk-tuk for half a day costs around 600 THB. Allow 15-20 minutes to cross the river by ferry (5 THB) if you stay on the east bank. **🍜 Where to Eat** For breakfast, try Roti Sai Mai at the market near Hua Ro (30 THB per portion) or khao tom at local stalls. Lunch options include Pa Lek Boat Noodles (50 THB per bowl) and Krua Thung Thong (80 THB per dish). Dinner at the night market on U Thong Road offers grilled seafood and som tam from 60 THB, open until 22:00. For a sit-down meal, Baan Kao Lao serves excellent green curry and tom yum for around 150 THB per person. **🏨 Where to Stay** Most budget guesthouses cluster on the island near Soi 2, with rooms from 400 THB per night. Mid-range options like Baan Thai House (from 1,200 THB) offer pool and breakfast. For luxury, Sala Ayutthaya (from 4,500 THB) sits on the river with views of Wat Phutthaisawan. Book ahead during the December and April festival seasons, when prices can double. **💡 Practical Tips** Buy a combined ticket for six major temples for 220 THB, valid for 30 days. Dress modestly at temples: cover shoulders and knees, and remove shoes before entering. Carry small bills for entry fees and transport, as many places do not accept cards. The hottest months are March to May, so plan outdoor activities before 11:00 or after 15:00. **🌙 Evening Activities** After sunset, the ruins at Wat Chaiwatthanaram are illuminated until 21:00, creating a magical atmosphere (entry 50 THB). The night market on U Thong Road is lively from 17:00 to 22:00, with food stalls and local crafts. For a relaxed drink, head to The Station Ayutthaya near the train station, which serves cocktails from 150 THB. Many guesthouses also offer Thai cooking classes in the evening for around 800 THB.
