**🗺️ Arrival and Orientation** Mazatan is a small town in the Soconusco region of Chiapas, about 30 minutes by colectivo from Tapachula. Most travelers arrive at the ADO bus station in Tapachula and then take a local colectivo or taxi to Mazatan; the colectivo costs around 20 pesos and leaves every 15 minutes from the market area. Once in town, the central plaza (Parque Central) is the main orientation point, with the church and municipal buildings nearby. Expect warm, humid weather year-round, so pack light clothing and a rain jacket if you visit between May and October. **☕ Day 1 Morning: Plaza and Market** Start your day at 8:00 AM with a traditional breakfast at one of the comedores facing the Parque Central; try the tamales de elote or huevos rancheros for about 50 pesos. Then wander through the Mercado Municipal, which is busiest from 7:00 to 10:00 AM, to see local produce like mamey, papaya, and cacao. Pick up a bag of fresh churros from the vendor on Calle Central for 15 pesos. The market is a 5-minute walk from the plaza, so no transport is needed. **🏞️ Day 1 Afternoon: Rio and Relax** After lunch, take a mototaxi (around 30 pesos) to the Rio Mazatan, a 10-minute ride west of town. The riverbanks are shaded and perfect for a relaxed afternoon swim or picnic; locals often gather there after 3:00 PM. Bring insect repellent and plenty of water, as there are few vendors. Return to town by 6:00 PM to catch the sunset from the plaza. **🍽️ Day 1 Evening: Dinner and Drinks** For dinner, head to Comedor Lupita, half a block north of the plaza, which serves regional dishes like cochito horneado and tasajo from 6:00 to 10:00 PM; a full plate costs around 80 pesos. Afterward, grab a michelada or fresh fruit juice at one of the small bars on Calle Hidalgo. The town is quiet, so nightlife ends early, usually by 11:00 PM. If you want more options, you can take a taxi to Tapachula for about 150 pesos, but it's not necessary. **🚌 Day 2 Morning: Tapachula Day Trip** Catch a colectivo to Tapachula at 7:30 AM from the main road (Carretera a Tapachula); the ride takes 30 to 40 minutes and costs 25 pesos. In Tapachula, visit the Museo Regional de Chiapas (open 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Tuesday to Sunday, entry 50 pesos) and the Miguel Hidalgo Central Park. Have lunch at the Mercado San Juan, where you can try authentic Chiapaneco tamales and pozol for under 60 pesos. Return to Mazatan by 4:00 PM to avoid the evening rush. **🌿 Day 2 Afternoon: Coffee Farm Tour** Back in Mazatan, arrange a coffee farm tour with a local guide; the tourist office near the plaza can help book one for about 200 pesos per person. The tour typically lasts 2 hours and includes a visit to a small finca where you'll learn about shade-grown coffee and taste fresh brews. Most tours start at 2:00 PM, so plan your return from Tapachula accordingly. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a hat, as the farms are exposed. **🌅 Day 3 Morning: Nature and Wildlife** On your final morning, take a guided birdwatching walk along the Rio Mazatan; tours leave at 6:30 AM from the plaza and cost around 150 pesos. You might spot motmots, parrots, and kingfishers in the early light. After the walk, have breakfast at the market again and try a bowl of atole with pan dulce. If you prefer a slower start, simply enjoy a coffee at Cafe Central on the plaza, open from 7:00 AM. **🛍️ Day 3 Afternoon: Souvenirs and Departure** Spend your last afternoon shopping for souvenirs at the Mercado Municipal; good buys include locally grown coffee, cacao, and woven textiles. Prices are fixed but reasonable: a kilo of coffee beans costs around 120 pesos. Colectivos to Tapachula leave every 15 minutes until 7:00 PM from the main road, so aim to depart by 5:00 PM if you have an evening bus. If you're staying another night, enjoy a final sunset at the plaza before dinner.
