Estadio's Sound System?

Question

So, I'm heading to @Cancun next month and I'm stoked to catch a game at the Estadio Olímpico Andrés Quintana Roo. I've heard it's a crazy atmosphere, but the online reviews are kinda vague about the sound system. Is it good enough to actually hear the announcers and the crowd roar over the general stadium buzz? I'm worried about missing crucial plays because I can't hear anything! My friend went a few years ago and said it was a bit muffled... hoping things have improved. Any insights from someone who's recently been there?

yeah the sound system is still pretty basic, nothing fancy. if you're in the lower sections near the south end by the tunnel, the echo from the concourse makes everything sound like a garbled mess. i'd recommend grabbing a seat in the east side bleachers, like around section 125-127, the speakers are pointed that way and you catch the announcer's calls better. also, the crowd roar is way more intense over there since it's closer to the away fans section, so you won't miss that energy even if the PA is a bit fuzzy

I've been to about a dozen games there over the last year and a half, and the sound system hasn't changed much since your friend's visit. The real issue isn't the speakers themselves, it's the concrete bowl that bounces everything around. If you're in the shade on the west side, the echo is worse because the sun heats the opposite wall and creates weird air pockets that muffle the PA. Sit on the east side in the sun if you can handle it, the sound travels cleaner there and you'll catch the announcer's calls for substitutions and stoppage time.

fwiw the sound's actually pretty decent if you're in the right spot, I've been a few times this year and the east side upper deck around section 201-205 is where it's at. the PA comes through clear and you can hear the chants and the drum section really well, but the west side lower bowl is a total echo chamber where everything sounds like it's underwater. just avoid sitting too close to the tunnel entrance on the south end, that's where the concourse noise bleeds in and drowns out everything else

the sound system is fine for the announcer calls honestly, the bigger issue is the stadium layout itself. if you sit in the lower sections near the field the concrete swallows up the crowd roar and you get this weird delay on the PA. i go to games a few times a year and always grab seats in the east side upper deck around section 201-205, the speakers are angled right at you and you can hear both the announcer and the chants clearly. the sun can be brutal over there during afternoon games though, bring a hat or sit on the west side if you want shade

It really depends on where you're sitting. Upper levels are generally better than the lower bowl, less echo. My last game there, a couple years back, the sound was decent but not amazing. You could hear the announcers okay, but the crowd roar was sometimes a bit swallowed up. Definitely not crystal clear, but you shouldn't miss crucial plays unless you're super far away or in a particularly bad spot. It's not a state-of-the-art system, but it's functional. Maybe bring earplugs if you're sensitive to loud noises, the atmosphere is *intense*.
