**🍜 Start with Hawker Centers** Begin your food journey at the New Lane Hawker Centre, located on New Lane off Macalister Road. It comes alive in the late afternoon, with stalls serving char koay teow, satay, and lok bak until around 10 PM. Most dishes cost between RM5 and RM12, so you can sample widely without breaking the bank. **🥘 Signature Dishes to Try** Do not leave without tasting Penang asam laksa, a sour and spicy fish noodle soup, and char koay teow, the smoky stir-fried rice noodles. For the best asam laksa, head to Air Itam Market, near the Kek Lok Si Temple, open from 10 AM to 6 PM daily. A bowl costs about RM8, and the rich broth is packed with mackerel and tamarind. **🍢 Street Food Stalls** For a true street food experience, wander along Kimberly Street in the evening, where you will find duck koay teow and chee cheong fun. The famous Ah Leng Char Koay Teow stall, at 61 Kimberley Street, opens from 5 PM to 11 PM and charges around RM10 per plate. Arrive early, as lines form quickly after sunset. **🍤 Seafood and Malay Fare** Head to the fishing village of Teluk Bahang, about 20 minutes from the city center, for fresh seafood at places like the Teluk Bahang Seafood Restaurant. A meal of grilled fish, prawns, and squid costs around RM50 per person. For authentic Malay cuisine, try Nasi Kandar Beratur at 48 Jalan Penang, where the rice and curry combo is a local favorite, with prices starting at RM8. **🍰 Sweet Treats and Desserts** Cool down with cendol, a shaved ice dessert with green jelly, coconut milk, and palm sugar, at Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul. Located at 27 Lebuh Keng Kwee, this stall is open from 10:30 AM to 6 PM and charges RM4 per bowl. For a modern twist, visit China House at 153 Beach Street, which serves a wide range of cakes and pastries from 9 AM to midnight. **🥢 Chinese and Nyonya Cuisine** Experience Peranakan flavors at Kebaya Dining Room, inside the Seven Terraces hotel at 14A Stewart Lane. The tasting menu costs around RM180 per person and features dishes like buah keluak and otak-otak. For a more casual option, try Auntie Gaik Lean's Old School Eatery at 1 Bishop Street, where a hearty Nyonya meal for two runs about RM60. **🍺 Evening Food and Drinks** As night falls, visit the Upper Penang Road area, where food trucks and bars line the street, offering everything from grilled skewers to craft beer. The Red Garden Food Court at 20 Lebuh Kimberley is a great spot for a late dinner, with stalls serving satay, fried oysters, and rojak until 1 AM. Expect to spend around RM15 per person for a satisfying meal. **💰 Budget and Splurge** Eating well in George Town does not have to be expensive, with most hawker meals costing under RM10. For a special occasion, book a table at The Weld Mansion at 30 Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah, where a fine-dining tasting menu starts at RM250. In between, mid-range restaurants like Nasi Padang Minang at 90 Lebuh Chulia offer generous plates for about RM15.
