**📱 SIM Cards and Connectivity** For reliable internet, grab a local SIM from Irancell or Hamrahe Aval at the airport or city center. A tourist SIM with data costs about 500,000 rials (roughly $1.50) for 10 GB. Free Wi-Fi is common in hotels and cafes, but a local SIM ensures you can navigate maps and book taxis. **💵 Currency and Payments** Iran uses the rial, but prices are often quoted in toman (1 toman = 10 rials). Carry cash, as international cards don't work; exchange at licensed sarafi (exchange offices) like those on Ferdowsi Street for better rates. ATMs dispense rials, but they only work with local bank cards, so plan to bring enough foreign currency (USD or EUR) to exchange. **🚕 Getting Around the City** Mashhad's metro (Line 1) connects the airport to the city center and the shrine, costing 15,000 rials per ride. Taxis are plentiful; use the Snapp app (like Uber) for fixed fares, or negotiate before hopping in. For the shrine area, walking is often easiest, as the central zone is pedestrian-friendly. **🕌 Cultural Etiquette at the Shrine** When visiting the Imam Reza Shrine, dress modestly: women must wear a chador (available free at the entrance) and men should wear long pants. Non-Muslims are welcome, but expect security checks and a respectful atmosphere. Photography is allowed in some areas, but avoid taking pictures of worshippers without permission. **🍽️ Must-Try Local Foods** Don't miss sholeh zard (saffron rice pudding) and kashk-e bademjan (eggplant dip) at traditional restaurants like Sharaf ol-Shams near the shrine. For a quick bite, try the fresh bread and kebabs at the Bazaar-e Reza food court. Budget around 300,000 rials ($1) for a filling meal at a local eatery. **🏛️ Top Sights for 3-5 Days** Spend your first day at the Imam Reza Shrine complex, including the Goharshad Mosque and the museum. On day two, explore the Nader Shah Museum and the Tomb of Ferdowsi in Tus, a short taxi ride away. If you have extra days, visit the Kooh Sangi Park and the Vakilabad Forest Park for a relaxing break. **🛍️ Shopping and Souvenirs** Head to the Bazaar-e Reza for saffron, pistachios, and Persian carpets; bargain for at least 20% off the initial price. For high-quality saffron, look for the Sargol grade at shops like Zafarany Ferdowsi. The bazaar is open daily from 9 AM to 9 PM, but it's busiest in the evening. **🌤️ Best Time to Visit** Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) offer mild weather and fewer crowds, ideal for first-timers. Summers can be hot, with temperatures above 35°C, while winters are cold but the shrine looks magical in snow. Avoid the peak pilgrimage periods like Nowruz (March) and Muharram, when hotels are packed and prices spike.
