**🏛️ Start at the Temples** Begin your Guwahati journey at the iconic Kamakhya Temple atop Nilachal Hill, one of the most revered Shakti shrines in India. Arrive early, around 7 AM, to avoid the crowds and the midday heat; the temple opens at 8 AM and closes at 8 PM, with a break from 1 PM to 2:30 PM. Don't miss the nearby Umananda Temple on Peacock Island, reachable by a short ferry ride from the Kachari Ghat (ferries run every 15 minutes, ₹30 round trip). **🛶 Cruise the Brahmaputra** A sunset cruise on the Brahmaputra is a must-do, offering stunning views of the city skyline and the hills. The Assam Tourism Development Corporation runs daily cruises from the Uzan Bazar Ghat, with departures at 4:30 PM and 6 PM (₹300 per person, 1.5 hours). For a more intimate experience, book a private boat from the same ghat for around ₹1,500 and watch the sun dip below the river. **🦏 Visit Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary** Just 55 kilometers east of Guwahati, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is your best chance to see the one-horned rhinoceros up close. The park has the highest density of rhinos in Assam, and a jeep safari (₹1,200 for a shared jeep, ₹3,000 for a private one) lasts about 1.5 hours. The best time to spot rhinos is early morning, so aim for the 7 AM safari; the park is open from November to April. **🍛 Taste Assamese Cuisine** For authentic Assamese thali, head to Bistro Aromas in Uzan Bazar, where a full meal with rice, fish curry, and local greens costs around ₹350. For a street-food experience, try the pitha (rice cakes) and luchi at the bustling Fancy Bazar area, especially in the morning. Don't leave without trying the famous Assam tea at the Brahmaputra Tea House in the city center, where a cup costs just ₹50. **🛍️ Shop at Local Markets** Fancy Bazar is the heart of Guwahati's shopping scene, where you can find everything from traditional Assamese silk (muga and paat) to bamboo handicrafts. Bargaining is expected, so start at half the quoted price. For a more curated experience, visit the Government Handicrafts Emporium on GS Road, which offers fixed prices and quality-assured products. **🌿 Explore the Greenery** Take a break from the city bustle at the Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden, the largest zoo in the Northeast, which houses rare species like the white tiger and hoolock gibbon. Entry is ₹50 for adults, and the zoo is open from 8 AM to 4:30 PM, closed on Fridays. For a scenic walk, head to the nearby Dighalipukhuri Park, a historic lake with boating facilities (₹50 per boat for 30 minutes). **🌆 Best Evening Spots** As the sun sets, head to the riverfront promenade at Uzan Bazar, where locals gather for evening strolls and street food. The area around the Guwahati Planetarium (open 10 AM to 5 PM, shows at 11 AM, 1 PM, and 4 PM) offers a peaceful atmosphere with views of the river. For a livelier scene, catch a cultural performance at the Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra, which hosts traditional dance and music shows in the evening (tickets ₹100). **🚌 Getting Around** Guwahati's public transport includes city buses (₹10 to ₹30) and auto-rickshaws, but the most convenient option for tourists is app-based cabs like Uber and Ola, which are widely available. For short distances, cycle rickshaws are still common in the old city areas, but agree on the fare before you start. If you plan to visit Pobitora or other outskirts, consider hiring a private cab for the day, which costs around ₹2,500 including fuel.
