**🏨 Where to Stay** Budget hotels near Dhanbad Junction start at around ₹800 per night for a basic double room, while guesthouses in the Hirapur area can be even cheaper at ₹500-₹600. For a bit more comfort, check out Hotel White House on Bank More, where rooms run ₹1,200-₹1,500. Book on weekdays to avoid the weekend rush, and always ask for a discount if you're staying more than two nights. **🍛 Eating on a Budget** Local thalis at small restaurants like Annapurna Bhojnalaya near the bus stand cost just ₹80-₹100, and you'll get unlimited rice, dal, and two veg sides. Street food is your friend: samosas for ₹10, kachori-sabzi for ₹20, and a full plate of chowmein for ₹40. For a sit-down meal, head to the food court in Centre Point Mall, where a veg meal with a drink sets you back about ₹150. **🚌 Getting Around** City buses are the cheapest way to move, with fares starting at ₹5 for short hops and ₹15 for cross-town trips. Auto-rickshaws are metered but always negotiate: a 3-km ride should cost ₹40-₹50, not the ₹80 drivers may quote. For day trips to nearby sights like Bhatinda Falls, share a jeep from the taxi stand near the railway station, which costs ₹50 per person each way. **🎟️ Entrance Fees** Most of Dhanbad's attractions are free, including the scenic Topchanchi Lake and the Jharia coal fields viewpoint. The only major paid site is the Indian School of Mines Museum, which charges a nominal ₹20 for adults. If you're into temples, the Shakti Mandir and the Jain temples in the city center have no entry fee, though donations are welcome. **🆓 Free Things to Do** Take a morning walk around the serene Topchanchi Lake, where you can watch locals fish and enjoy the cool breeze without spending a rupee. Explore the bustling Hirapur Market, a sensory overload of colors and smells, and chat with vendors to learn about local life. For a panoramic view of the city, hike up to the Panchet Hill viewpoint at sunrise, a favorite spot for locals. **💡 How Locals Save** Locals always eat at the smaller, family-run eateries rather than the big restaurants, and they often bring their own containers for takeaway to avoid packaging charges. They use shared autos (where you pay per seat) instead of hiring a whole rickshaw, cutting transport costs by half. For groceries, they shop at the weekly haat (market) in Saraidhela, where fresh produce is 20-30% cheaper than in supermarkets. **🛍️ Shopping Smart** For souvenirs and handicrafts, skip the tourist shops and head to the local bazaars like Bank More or Katras Road, where you can haggle for items like coal-art pieces and traditional jewelry. A good rule is to offer half the quoted price and negotiate from there. For daily essentials, use the government-run fair price shops, which sell staples at subsidized rates to all residents. **💰 Money-Saving Apps** Download the 'Dhanbad Darshan' app, which offers discounts at participating restaurants and hotels, and use it to find deals on local tours. For transport, the 'Jharkhand Transit' app lets you book bus tickets at a 10% discount. Always pay with UPI apps like PhonePe or Google Pay, as many small vendors offer a 2-3% discount for digital payments to avoid cash handling.
