**🍲 Must-Try Local Dishes** Start with fumbwa, a rich stew of wild spinach and palm oil often served with rice or chikwange. Another staple is liboke, fish or chicken wrapped in banana leaves and grilled over charcoal, which you'll find at many local eateries. For a quick bite, try sambusa, triangular pastries filled with meat or vegetables, sold at street stalls for around 500 to 1,000 CDF (0.25 to 0.50 USD). **🍽️ Top Restaurants in Town** For a sit-down meal, head to Restaurant La Dolce Vita on Avenue du Lac, which serves Congolese and Italian dishes with mains from 10,000 to 20,000 CDF (5 to 10 USD). Chez Nicaise, near the central market, is popular for its grilled tilapia and plantains, with plates around 8,000 CDF. Both places are open for lunch and dinner, typically from noon to 10 PM. **🌮 Street Food Stalls** The area around Place de l'Indépendance comes alive in the evenings with vendors selling grilled maize, brochettes (meat skewers), and fried plantains. A stick of brochettes costs about 2,000 CDF (1 USD), and grilled maize is 500 CDF. For the freshest options, arrive between 6 and 8 PM when the stalls are busiest. **🐟 Seafood by the Lake** Bukavu's lakeside location means excellent fresh fish, especially tilapia and capitaine from Lake Kivu. Restaurants like La Belle Vue on Avenue de la Paix offer grilled fish platters for 15,000 to 25,000 CDF (7.50 to 12.50 USD), with views over the water. For a more casual setting, try the fish stalls near the port, where you can get a whole grilled fish for around 10,000 CDF. **🥘 Neighborhood Eateries** In the Ibanda neighborhood, small family-run eateries serve hearty local meals at low prices. Chez Mama Jeanne on Avenue Lumumba is known for its madesu (bean stew) and rice, with a full plate for 5,000 CDF (2.50 USD). Over in Kadutu, you'll find many spots offering chikwange (cassava bread) and pondu (cassava leaf stew) for around 4,000 CDF. **💰 Budget and Prices** Street food and local eateries are very affordable, with meals costing between 2,000 and 8,000 CDF (1 to 4 USD). Mid-range restaurants charge 10,000 to 20,000 CDF (5 to 10 USD) for a main dish, while upscale places may ask 25,000 CDF or more. Keep cash in small denominations, as many places don't accept cards. **🕒 Best Times to Eat** Lunch is typically served from noon to 2 PM, and dinner from 6 to 9 PM. Street food stalls are most active in the evening, especially around 6 to 8 PM. Some local eateries close on Sundays, so plan accordingly. **🚌 Getting Around** To explore different food spots, you can take a moto-taxi (boda boda) for short trips, with fares around 1,000 to 2,000 CDF (0.50 to 1 USD). For larger groups, a shared taxi might be better, costing about 5,000 CDF for a cross-town trip. Most restaurants and stalls are concentrated in the Ibanda and Kadutu areas, which are easily walkable during the day.
