**🍜 Must-Try Noodles** Zaoyang's signature dish is the hot dry noodles, known locally as re gan mian. For an authentic bowl, head to Lao Wang Noodle Shop on Guangchang Road, where a generous portion costs only 8 yuan. The noodles are tossed in sesame paste and chili oil, then topped with scallions and pickled vegetables. Go before 9 a.m. to avoid the morning rush. **🥟 Dumpling Delights** For handmade dumplings, visit Dumpling Garden on Jiefang Street, a family-run spot that has been serving locals for over 20 years. Their pork and chive dumplings are the crowd favorite, priced at 12 yuan for a plate of 15. You can watch the staff roll and fold the wrappers right at the front window. Pair them with a bowl of their tangy vinegar dipping sauce. **🍢 Street Food Stalls** As dusk falls, the night market along Dongfeng Road comes alive with sizzling skewers and smoky grills. Try the grilled lamb skewers at Xiao Chen BBQ, where each stick costs just 3 yuan and is seasoned with cumin and chili powder. Also look for the stinky tofu vendor near the east gate, whose crispy tofu with spicy sauce is a local cult favorite. Bring cash, as most stalls do not accept mobile payments. **🍲 Hotpot Hotspots** When the weather turns chilly, locals flock to Little Sheep Hotpot on Renmin Avenue for a warming meal. The set menu for two includes a choice of broth, assorted meats, and fresh vegetables for 128 yuan. Their signature is the tomato and mushroom double-flavor broth, which is both savory and slightly sweet. Book ahead on weekends, as the place fills up quickly. **🍰 Sweet Treats** For dessert, try the traditional osmanthus cake at Sweet Memories Bakery on Wenhua Road. These delicate, flower-scented cakes are made fresh daily and cost only 5 yuan each. Another local favorite is the red bean glutinous rice balls, served warm with a drizzle of honey. The bakery also offers a variety of seasonal fruit tarts, perfect for a light afternoon snack. **🏘️ Hidden Neighborhood Gems** Venture into the old residential area near the South Gate to find unmarked family-run eateries that serve home-style dishes. One standout is Auntie Liu's Kitchen, tucked in a narrow alley off Heping Road, where a set meal of three dishes and rice costs just 20 yuan. The menu changes daily based on what is fresh at the market, so be ready to be surprised. These spots rarely have English menus, so bring a translation app or go with a local friend. **💰 Budget Bites** Eating well in Zaoyang is remarkably affordable, with most street snacks costing between 3 and 10 yuan. A full meal at a casual restaurant rarely exceeds 30 yuan per person. For the cheapest eats, stick to the food stalls near the bus station, where a hearty bowl of noodles or a stuffed pancake will fill you up for under 8 yuan. Even the mid-range hotpot places offer good value, with set menus that serve two generously. **🕒 Timing Your Meals** Breakfast is a serious affair in Zaoyang, with noodle shops and dumpling stalls bustling from 6 to 9 a.m. Lunch is typically served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and many small restaurants close for a short break in the afternoon. Dinner starts early, around 5:30 p.m., and the night market is most lively from 7 to 10 p.m. If you want to avoid crowds, aim for a late breakfast or an early dinner, but note that some popular spots sell out by noon.
