**🍽️ Where to Start** Begin your culinary tour in the bustling area around Tashilhunpo Monastery, where many local eateries cluster. For a classic Tibetan meal, try the family-run Norling Restaurant on Jiefang Road, which serves hearty thukpa and momos for about 20 to 35 yuan. Arrive by 11:30 a.m. to beat the lunch rush. **🥟 Must-Try Momos** Momos are the star of Xigaze's street food, and the best ones are steamed fresh at small stalls near the old market on Qingdao Road. The beef and cabbage momos at Lhasa Sweet Tea House cost only 15 yuan for a plate of ten, and they are served with a fiery chili dip. For a crispy version, seek out the pan-fried momos at the night market behind the Jinshan Hotel. **🍜 Noodle and Soup Specialties** Thukpa, a hearty noodle soup, is a local staple that warms you up on chilly days. The hand-pulled noodles at Yarlung Restaurant on Zhufeng Road are a favorite, with a rich yak broth and tender meat for 25 yuan a bowl. For a lighter option, try the sweet potato noodles at the small shop next to the Xigaze Bus Station, which costs just 18 yuan. **🫖 Butter Tea and Sweet Tea** No visit to Xigaze is complete without sampling po cha, the salty butter tea that fuels locals, and cha ngamo, a sweet milk tea. The traditional tea house on the corner of Jiefang and Qingdao Roads serves both for 5 yuan per cup, and you can watch the tea being churned. If you are new to butter tea, start with a small cup and add sugar if you like. **🍖 Yak and Meat Dishes** Yak meat is the centerpiece of many meals here, often dried or stir-fried with vegetables. The spicy yak stir-fry at the Snowland Restaurant on Zhufeng Road is a must-try, priced at 45 yuan and served with a mountain of rice. For a more casual bite, grab a yak meat skewer from the street vendors near the night market for 10 yuan each. **🍮 Sweet Treats and Desserts** After a savory meal, satisfy your sweet tooth with Tibetan sweet rice, a creamy dish made with butter, sugar, and raisins. The version at the Gang Gyan Restaurant on Qingdao Road is particularly good, costing 20 yuan per bowl. You can also find fresh yogurt topped with honey at the morning market, sold by the cup for 8 yuan. **🏙️ Hidden Neighborhood Gems** Venture into the residential lanes behind the Tashilhunpo Monastery to discover tiny family-run kitchens that serve home-style dishes. One such spot, the Auntie Drolma Kitchen, offers a set meal of rice, two vegetable curries, and a small soup for just 30 yuan. These places often have no English menus, so bring a translation app or point at what other diners are eating. **💰 Budget and Price Tips** Eating in Xigaze is generally inexpensive, with most street snacks costing between 5 and 20 yuan, and sit-down meals rarely exceeding 50 yuan per person. Carry small bills, as many stalls and smaller restaurants do not accept credit cards or mobile payments. For the freshest ingredients, shop at the morning market on Qingdao Road, where you can assemble a picnic for under 30 yuan.
