**🏯 Imperial Highlights** Start at the Forbidden City's lesser-known west entrance, the Meridian Gate (Wu Men), which often has shorter lines than the main south entrance. Book tickets online at least a week in advance (60 RMB in peak season, closed Mondays). After exiting, climb Jingshan Park's Wanchun Pavilion for a panoramic view of the palace roofs, especially stunning at sunset (2 RMB entry). **🌳 Park Life Like a Local** Beihai Park is Xicheng's green lung, where retirees practice tai chi and sing revolutionary songs near the White Dagoba. Rent a pedal boat on the lake (50 RMB per hour) or join a morning tai chi session at 7 AM by the Nine-Dragon Wall. In autumn, the ginkgo trees along the park's eastern path turn a brilliant gold. **🏮 Hutong Wanderings** Get lost in the Shichahai area's narrow alleys, where courtyard homes sit beside trendy cafes. Walk from Yandai Xiejie (the angled street) to the Silver Ingot Bridge for sunset views over Houhai Lake. For a quieter experience, explore the lesser-visited Baitasi neighborhood, home to a white dagoba from the Yuan dynasty and independent boutiques. **🍜 Local Eats and Snacks** Skip the tourist traps on Qianmen Street and head to Niujie, Beijing's Muslim quarter, for authentic niu rou bing (beef flatbread) and lamb skewers. Try Baodu Feng (address: 16 Nanheng West Street) for traditional tripe dishes, or grab a bowl of zhajiangmian (noodles with soybean paste) at Haiwanju (24 Dongsi North Street). For a quick snack, look for jianbing stalls near the Drum Tower around 7 AM. **🎭 Cultural Shows and Workshops** Catch a traditional Peking opera performance at the Huguang Guild Hall (3 Hufang Road), which also hosts tea ceremonies and folk art shows. For a hands-on experience, join a calligraphy workshop at the Beijing Calligraphy Art Museum (24 Sanlihe Road) on weekend afternoons. Book tickets via WeChat mini-programs for discounts. **🛍️ Markets and Shopping** Browse the antique stalls at Panjiayuan Market (18 Huaweili, Chaoyang District, but easily reached by subway line 10) on weekends for Mao-era memorabilia and calligraphy supplies. For contemporary crafts, visit the shops along Yangmeizhu Xiejie, a restored hutong street with indie designers. Don't miss the Beijing Postcards shop (Xingfu Street) for vintage maps and local history books. **🚇 Getting Around** Xicheng is well-served by subway lines 1, 2, 4, and 6, with key stops like Xidan, Nanluoguxiang, and Ping'anli. Buy a Yikatong card (20 RMB deposit) for 50% discounts on bus fares and easy subway access. Taxis are plentiful but avoid peak hours (7-9 AM and 5-7 PM) when traffic in the hutongs grinds to a halt. **💡 Insider Tips** Many attractions require advance reservation via WeChat mini-programs, so set up your account before arrival. Visit the White Pagoda Temple (Miaoying Temple) on a weekday morning to avoid crowds and catch monks chanting. For a unique experience, join a community square dance at Xidan Cultural Square around 7 PM, where locals welcome visitors to join in.
