**🍜 Must-Try Uyghur Dishes** Turpan's food scene is rooted in Uyghur cuisine, with lamb, noodles, and fresh fruit leading the way. Start with laghman, hand-pulled noodles topped with a savory lamb and vegetable stir-fry, found at almost any local restaurant for 15 to 25 yuan. Another essential is polo, a fragrant rice pilaf cooked with carrots, raisins, and tender chunks of mutton, typically priced between 20 and 35 yuan. For a true taste of the region, try the roasted lamb skewers, seasoned with cumin and chili, sold at street stalls for about 5 to 10 yuan per skewer. **🍢 Street Food Stalls** The evening market near the Turpan Night Market on Wenhua Road is the best place to graze on street food. Look for stalls selling samsa, baked lamb-filled pastries, for 5 to 8 yuan each, and freshly grilled lamb kebabs for 10 yuan. You'll also find bowls of yogurt topped with honey and walnuts for around 10 yuan, a cooling treat after a day in the desert heat. The market runs from about 6 PM to midnight, and it's busiest on weekends. **🍇 Turpan's Famous Grapes** Turpan is known as China's grape capital, and the local seedless white grapes are a must-try from August to October. Visit the Grape Valley (Putao Gou) just 15 kilometers northeast of the city, where you can buy fresh grapes for 10 to 20 yuan per kilogram directly from the vineyards. Dried raisins are sold everywhere, but the best quality comes from the Sunday market near the Emin Minaret. Don't miss the sweet grape juice and grape-based desserts at small cafes along Jiefang Road. **🥘 Best Local Restaurants** For a sit-down meal, head to the Turpan Uyghur Restaurant at 168 Jiefang Road, which serves generous portions of polo and laghman for 30 to 50 yuan per person. Another favorite is the Silk Road Restaurant near the Turpan Hotel, known for its lamb stew and homemade naan bread, with mains around 40 yuan. For budget travelers, the small eateries around the Turpan Bus Station offer filling noodle soups for under 15 yuan. Most restaurants open at 11 AM and close around 10 PM. **🍉 Fruit and Snacks** Turpan's dry climate produces some of the sweetest melons in China, especially the Hami melon, sold at fruit stands for 5 to 10 yuan per slice. In summer, look for fresh watermelon and cantaloupe at the morning market on Gaochang Road, where vendors also sell dried apricots and figs for around 20 yuan per bag. A popular local snack is roasted sunflower seeds, sold in small paper cones for 3 yuan. Pair any fruit with a cup of local brick tea, often free at small teahouses. **🕒 When and Where to Eat** Breakfast in Turpan is simple: naan bread with tea or a bowl of milky porridge, available at street stalls from 7 AM for about 5 yuan. Lunch is the main meal, usually between 1 PM and 3 PM, when restaurants serve fresh laghman and polo. Dinner starts late, around 8 PM, and the night market is the go-to spot for grazing. Note that during Ramadan, some Uyghur restaurants may have adjusted hours, so check locally. **💡 Practical Food Tips** Most small restaurants and street stalls only accept cash, so carry small bills in yuan. Tipping is not customary, and prices are fixed. If you have dietary restrictions, learn a few phrases like 'no chili' (bu yao la) or 'no lamb' (bu yao yang rou) to communicate with vendors. Hygiene at street stalls is generally fine, but stick to freshly cooked items and peeled fruit. For a reliable meal, the Turpan Hotel restaurant offers a clean, English-menu option with mains from 50 yuan.
