the jiaohe ruins are worth the half day trip out, its an entire abandoned city carved into a plateau and way less crowded than the main flaming mountain spots. if you're into food, the night market on laocheng road has these mutton skewers that are better than anything near the tourist sites, just follow the smoke. for a real hidden spot, ask a driver to take you to the emin minaret, its the oldest in china and the surrounding park is empty most weekdays
Three months from now is late spring, so it'll be warming up nicely but not scorching yet. The Flaming Mountains are a must, but instead of just the touristy spots, hike the Tuyoq Valley (Tuyugou) on the north side. It's quieter than the main sites and you'll see ancient Buddhist caves and Uyghur villages in the same canyon. For a hidden gem, head to the Astana Tombs just west of the city, they're the underground burial site with incredible mummies and silk fragments, and it's rarely crowded. If you have a full day, the drive to the Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves is worth it, but pack a lunch since the on-site food is overpriced and not great.
