**🍜 Must-Try Dishes** Start with the local specialty, Nehe-style braised pork ribs, slow-cooked with soy sauce and star anise until fall-off-the-bone tender. Another favorite is the crispy fried river fish from the Nen River, often served whole with a side of pickled vegetables. For a lighter option, try the wild mushroom soup, made with locally foraged fungi and a clear chicken broth. **🏪 Top Restaurants** For a sit-down meal, head to Lao Bei Fang Restaurant on Central Street, known for its generous portions and authentic Northeastern flavors; a meal for two costs around 80-120 yuan. Another reliable choice is Xiang Man Lou on East Avenue, where the signature dish is the braised pork with preserved vegetables, priced at 58 yuan per plate. Both places are busy at lunch, so arrive before noon to snag a table. **🍢 Street Food Spots** The night market on Guangming Road comes alive after 6 PM with stalls selling grilled lamb skewers, stinky tofu, and candied hawthorns. Try the spicy crayfish from stall 12, which locals swear by, at 30 yuan per portion. For a sweet treat, grab a freshly made sugar-coated haws from the cart near the east gate of the market. **🥟 Breakfast and Bakeries** Begin your day at the morning market on Jiefang Street, where vendors sell steaming jianbing (savory crepes) and soy milk for about 5 yuan. For a heartier option, visit the family-run dumpling shop, Shui Jiao Wang, on North Ring Road, offering pork and chive dumplings at 12 yuan for a dozen. Pair your meal with a cup of hot soybean milk from the adjacent stall. **🍺 Evening Dining Scene** As the sun sets, the barbecue restaurants along West River Road fill with locals enjoying grilled meats and cold beer. One standout is Da Pai Dang BBQ, where a full spread of skewers and sides costs about 50 yuan per person. For a quieter evening, try the hotpot at Xiao Long Kan on South Street, where the spicy broth is a local favorite and a shared meal runs 100-150 yuan for two. **💰 Budget Tips** Eating well in Nehe doesn't have to break the bank. Street food meals typically cost between 10 and 30 yuan, while a mid-range restaurant dinner for two averages 80-120 yuan. To save money, order the daily specials, which many restaurants post on their doors, and share dishes family-style. Also, skip the tourist-oriented spots near the train station, where prices are often higher. **🚌 Getting to Food Areas** Most food hotspots are within walking distance of the city center, but for the night market, take bus 2 or 5 to the Guangming Road stop. Taxis are cheap, with fares starting at 6 yuan, and ride-hailing apps like Didi are widely available. If you're driving, note that parking near the night market is limited, so consider parking at the nearby shopping mall and walking over. **📅 Seasonal Food Events** In late summer, the annual Nehe Food Festival takes place in People's Park, featuring stalls from local restaurants and home cooks. During the festival, you can sample regional specialties like smoked horse meat and wild berry jams for a small fee. The festival runs from August 15 to 20, and it's a great chance to try dishes you won't find on regular menus.
