**🏛️ Historic Heart** Start at the Gaizhou Confucian Temple, a Ming-era complex that has been carefully restored and remains a peaceful retreat in the city center. The temple grounds open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and admission is 20 RMB. Look for the ancient stele inscriptions near the main hall, which tell stories of local scholars from centuries past. **🏞️ Scenic Escapes** For a dose of nature, head to Xianrendao National Forest Park, about 30 kilometers south of the city. The park is famous for its dramatic granite peaks and clear mountain streams, and the main loop trail takes about three hours to complete. A taxi from downtown Gaizhou costs roughly 60 RMB, or you can take the hourly bus from the long-distance station for 8 RMB. **🍜 Local Flavors** Gaizhou is known for its seafood, especially the fresh oysters and clams that come from the nearby Bohai Bay. For a true local experience, visit the night market on Dongguan Road, where stalls serve grilled squid and spicy crayfish from 6 p.m. until midnight. A full meal for two with drinks usually runs between 80 and 120 RMB. **🏺 Craft and Culture** The Gaizhou Folk Museum, located in a restored Qing-dynasty courtyard on Xinhua Street, showcases traditional pottery, embroidery, and farming tools from the region. It is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and entry is free. Check the museum's schedule for weekend demonstrations of clay figurine making, a craft that has been practiced here for over 200 years. **🌿 Parks and Leisure** For a relaxed afternoon, stroll through the Qinghe Park, a riverside green space that is especially lively in the early morning when locals practice tai chi and sing opera. The park has a small lake with paddle boats for rent at 30 RMB per hour, and it is a favorite spot for families on weekends. Benches under the willow trees offer a quiet place to watch the world go by. **🚌 Getting Around** Gaizhou's city center is compact enough to explore on foot, but buses and taxis are cheap and convenient for longer trips. City buses cost 2 RMB per ride, and taxis start at 7 RMB with a flag-down fee that covers the first three kilometers. For day trips to the coast or forest park, consider hiring a taxi for the day, which typically costs 300 to 400 RMB including waiting time. **🌆 Evening Strolls** As the sun sets, the area around the Drum Tower becomes a lively hub where locals gather to chat, play chess, and snack on candied hawthorn skewers. The tower itself is illuminated after dark, making it a great backdrop for photos. Nearby, the pedestrian street on Shengli Road offers a mix of small shops and tea houses that stay open until 10 p.m. **📅 Seasonal Highlights** If you visit in late September, do not miss the Gaizhou Seafood Festival, which celebrates the autumn harvest with cooking competitions and free tastings along the waterfront. In spring, the city's parks burst into color with cherry blossoms, and locals often picnic under the trees. Check with the local tourism office for exact festival dates, as they can shift by a week or two each year.
