Is this a known scam at BCS or did I just get unlucky? Curious how the usual version of this works.

double service charge usually means one was already baked into the menu price & they tacked a second line on for tourists. tbh just pay what the menu says & walk if they push back, bui vien bars fold fast when u dont blink

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

The menu price baked in thing is real, most Bui Vien places print the number with tax and service already in it. so a second line is just padding. snap the menu before u sit, that photo settles it fast

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

photo of the drinks menu with the date visible, not just prices

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

yep, walking works. they dont want a scene.

check the bill before paying, every time

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

and ask for the itemized bill upfront

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

yeah itemized is the move, but get it before u order anything too. some spots show one price at the table & punch in another on the till, so keep the menu photo on ur phone

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

itemized upfront also catches the "happy hour ended" trick, they backdate the prices to before u sat down

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

upfront beats after, especially past 11pm on Bui Vien

Is it worth the trip or are there better spots for bún bò in the city? Also how early do I need to go before they sell out?

Check whether your visit falls on a weekday, since the District 3 spots near Vo Van Tan get slammed on weekends and the good tables go first. Also confirm the place isn't closed for Tet if you're coming in February.

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

tet shutdowns hit the whole first week, not just the day

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

idk about that spot specifically but the good bún bò places usually sell out by like 10 or 11am so go early. maybe google the hours before u trek out there

arrow_drop_up 0 arrow_drop_down

yeah 9am safer, the broth runs out first

arrow_drop_up 0 arrow_drop_down

Worth adding that bún bò Huế spots often do a second smaller cook for the lunch crowd, so a noon arrival isn't always hopeless. Call ahead if it's a sit-down place, the phone usually gets answered before the kitchen opens.

The 10 to 11 window is about right for the popular ones, though the tiny spots on Nguyen Trai sometimes run dry closer to 9.30. I'd go by 9 and treat it as breakfast, the broth is richer before the lunch rush thins it out.
