What's the current situation for foreigners opening a bank account, and which banks are easiest if I only have a tourist visa at first? Also curious whether Wise or Revolut transfers are still the cheapest way to get money in.

wise is solid for transfers but vietcombank and techcombank are the usual picks once u have a proper visa. on a tourist visa only, most will turn u down, so try a smaller branch or wait until u switch to a business or work visa.

agreed, though techcombank's branch on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai was the one that actually let a friend open an account on a tourist visa last year. worth trying before assuming it's a hard no

That branch tip tracks, though policies shift fast so call ahead and bring your passport plus a local address and phone number.

ask which branch staff member, turnover there is high

vietinbank tends to be stricter on tourist visas so don't burn a morning there, cimb is the softer option if u want to try before the visa switch

cimb in district 7, quieter

The visa point is the real blocker, so don't count on an exception. If you're stuck waiting, a temporary residence card changes things a lot. For transfers, compare the fee plus the FX spread, since the spread often costs more than the headline fee.

true on the spread, wise usually beats bank wire by a percent or two but shop the rate on the day you send since it moves

acb on tran quang khai, quieter counter

just get a temporary residence card sorted first, it makes everything less painful

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

The Salty Coffee's wifi is fine for calls, and most people I know aimed for three months and stayed closer to six.

arrow_drop_up 0 arrow_drop_down

Six months tracks, but the Europe overlap is brutal here, like 2pm to 6pm ish.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Yeah, US overlap is the killer, 10pm to 2am
