Is District 1 safe to walk at night in Ho Chi Minh City 2026?

Which parts of District 1 get sketchy after dark and which ones are still full of people at that hour?

I've walked that area a few times, the stretch along De Tham stays lit and busy well past midnight. The sketchy bit is the park across from Ben Thanh, it goes dark and empty so I'd cut east instead.

good call on the park, the dark stretch is really the whole 23/9 roundabout side after 11, cut through Ham Nghi instead

The stretch by the Saigon Tax Trade Center end of the roundabout empties out fast after 11, so cutting east earlier is the move.

Le Loi side stays lit too, just fewer folks

Ton That Tung side stays lit, more foot traffic

Bui Vien itself stays packed past 2am so that stretch is fine. The quiet blocks toward Co Giang get empty and Grab drivers sometimes won't go down those alleys late. I'd Grab it after midnight, mostly for the heat and hassle.

yeah the heat is teh real argument honestly, walking 15 min at 1am and you're soaked. one thing though, the blocks right off Pham Ngu Lao toward Cong Quynh stay pretty alive till late, food stalls and all, so it's not all dead past the main strip.

Nguyen Trai side stays lit too, just fewer people

Ly Tu Trong, empty by 11:30.

Getting paid in Ho Chi Minh City in 2026: banking tips?

Is it worth opening a local bank account, or should I just use my foreign cards and take the ATM fees? Also curious if transfers from abroad tend to be a hassle.
arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

honestly just use ur foreign card at ATMs and eat the ~50k VND fee per withdrawal, it's cheaper than the paperwork headache of a local account for a few months. If u do open one, bring your passport and visa plus proof of address like a rental contract, the banks are strict on that.

I've only visited, but I looked into this before a long stay. A local account with a bank like Techcombank or VPBank is worth it if you're there months, mostly because VietQR payments are everywhere now and cash is a hassle for daily stuff. Foreign transfers are the catch: expect to show your work contract or lease, and SWIFT fees plus a poor exchange rate on the receiving end. Wise or similar often beats a bank-to-bank transfer.

Wise still needs your tax residency sorted first.

Timed transfers before noon clear same day.
