Tourist rate, 45-60k on hem side streets.

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

yeah tourist rate for sure. i paid 45k at a little spot on pham ngu lao last month, no menu just pointing. quit walking, the hem spots a block off the main road drop fast.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Fair for District 1, but crossing Nguyen Trai into District 5 the same plate drops to around 40k.

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

That drop makes sense, the rent gap between the two sides is huge. only thing is the District 5 spots tend to be smaller portions, so u might end up ordering two.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

makes sense, the alley spots off Tran Hung Dao side prob land somewhere in between once you factor in aircon

arrow_drop_up 0 arrow_drop_down

those hem spots also shave the portion, so the 90k plate usually comes with more pork

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

true, the pork on a proper plate runs 80 to 100 grams vs maybe 50 at a cheap stall, so you're paying per gram really

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

yep the pork diff is real, but watch the rice too. cheap stalls scoop less and pack it loose so the plate looks full. ask for com them (extra rice) if u want to actually get full, usually 5 to 10k more

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Add a drink and it's 75k.

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

Drinks usually tack on 20 to 30k so the math checks out.

Getting paid in Ho Chi Minh City in 2026: banking tips?

Is it worth opening a local bank account, or should I just use my foreign cards and take the ATM fees? Also curious if transfers from abroad tend to be a hassle.
arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

honestly just use ur foreign card at ATMs and eat the ~50k VND fee per withdrawal, it's cheaper than the paperwork headache of a local account for a few months. If u do open one, bring your passport and visa plus proof of address like a rental contract, the banks are strict on that.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

I've only visited, but I looked into this before a long stay. A local account with a bank like Techcombank or VPBank is worth it if you're there months, mostly because VietQR payments are everywhere now and cash is a hassle for daily stuff. Foreign transfers are the catch: expect to show your work contract or lease, and SWIFT fees plus a poor exchange rate on the receiving end. Wise or similar often beats a bank-to-bank transfer.

Wise still needs your tax residency sorted first.

Timed transfers before noon clear same day.
