Baker pay in Los Angeles 2026: does it cover rent?

Is it still hovering around $18 to $22 an hour, and does anyone making that in this city manage to cover rent without a second job? Curious what folks in the trade are actually seeing.

$18 to $22 is about right for counter work, but rent alone in Silver Lake or Echo Park eats most of that, so people I know share in Boyle Heights or commute from the Valley.

yeah and the valley commute eats the pay diff, Metrolink from Burbank plus parking is like $200 a month.

The 5am start is the real killer, since buses aren't running yet and you're stuck paying for parking anyway.

Sharing in Koreatown, $1,100 a room.

Fair point on the geography, though I'd add that the split is usually three or four people in a two bedroom now, not just a roommate pair. A single room on the east side is running $1,000 to $1,200, which leaves almost nothing after groceries and gas.

Highland Park too, Gold Line gets you downtown by 5:30.

pastry chefs at nicer spots like republique pull closer to 26 plus tips so counter scale isnt the whole story

Tips pool gets split with the counter too, so that $26 shrinks.

Langers? no, Republique's base is closer to 23 before tips

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

good to know, i always assumed it was closer to 20 flat there so 23 changes the math a bit

Anyone else hit up Levain & Co on weekends? Their laminated stuff is legit but I wanna branch out, so where are u getting your croissant fix nearby? Drop recs please. Proof Bakery, order the kouign amann instead.

Second this, the kouign amann sells out by ten.

Fair call, though I'd get there by 8 on Saturday since the case thins out fast.

what u getting there besides the kouign amann tho

Their pain au chocolat is the real sleeper there, and the line moves quicker than the laminated case suggests.

Yep, but get there closer to 7:30, the kouign amann tray's usually gone by 8:15 on a weekday too.

If you're near the Larchmont spot, Clark Street does a solid almond croissant and their bread is worth the detour. On weekends go before 9 or the case gets picked over. Expect to pay around $6.

The almond croissant is worth it but I'd skip the weekend crush entirely and go Tuesday around 8, when the case is still full and there's no line. Heads up that parking on that stretch is permit-only after 8am, so read the signs.
