Wildlife spotting at Nature Park in Los Angeles 2026

Visiting LA next spring and heard the Nature Park has deer and other wildlife. What time of day is best to actually see them, and is it worth renting a car to get there from downtown? Dawn around 6am works best, and honestly you'll want the car since the DASH buses don't run early enough out there.

The Franklin Ave entrance lot fills by 6:15 on weekends, so aim to arrive ten minutes earlier than you think you need to.

Weekday mornings are much calmer, I usually roll in around 6:30 and still find spots.

Yeah midweek is a totally different park, I've had the meadow basically to myself. Only catch is the lower gate by the picnic area doesn't open till 7 on weekdays, so you're hiking in from the street if you beat that.

Car's right, but the lot off Vermont fills fast too.

Six is right, but the real bottleneck is the 101. Leave downtown by 5:15 or you'll sit in the canyon traffic and miss the whole window.

Late afternoon around 5 or 6 is underrated, the deer come out to graze near the oak grove off the main trail. Skip the rental and take the Metro B Line to Hollywood then a rideshare, parking there is a nightmare on weekends.

5 or 6 works but bring a headlamp for the walk back, that trail gets pitch black by 7:30 in spring

Agree on the rideshare, the Ferndell entrance is closer to the deer anyway.

Ferndell's good but the deer actually browse higher up near the observatory side most mornings tbh

tbh the real move is hitting the taco trucks on Olympic around midnight, the ones parked near the auto body shops. way better than waiting in a line somewhere trendy. fwiw the al pastor there is fresher than most sit down spots and u can eat for like 10 bucks. just bring cash cuz half of em dont take cards

Yeah the trucks near the auto body shops are the move, but swing by before midnight since a few pack up early on weeknights.

The truck on the corner of Pico and Vermont is my usual, they're out until 3 on Fridays and the cachetada is worth the extra couple bucks. One thing on the cash note, most of them have a Venmo QR taped up now so you're not totally stranded.

Cash only holds, the trompo near 28th is the tell.

Bites on Western is solid but I've been hitting the Korean spots on 6th around 3am, those places never close. The sullungtang at Han Bat is exactly what you want after a long night. Cash only though, learned that the hard way.

Han Bat hits different at that hour, just don't roll in right at close or you'll get the stare.
