You're right that the machines don't pick up much litter, but the real issue is that street sweeping only works when people aren't parking on the curb. If your block has cars parked during sweeping hours, the machine just drives around them and misses most of the street. I've seen it happen on my own street in Silver Lake where half the block gets skipped because of parked cars. The city does have a complaint system for missed pickups, but honestly the best fix is getting neighbors to actually move their cars on sweeping days.

Yeah, it's frustrating, but the street sweepers are really there to meet federal clean water mandates by keeping stuff out of the storm drains. The litter on the sidewalk is a whole different problem that the city usually ignores unless people file a 311 request.

Skip Sunday entirely, go Wednesday night when you can actually park on Vermont without circling.

I'd take the Metro B Line to Vermont/Beverly then the 204 up Vermont, it drops you a block from the spot. Sunday morning fills the lot by 9:30 so drive only if you're early. A weekday evening is calmer for a first visit.
