Having lived in both Los Angeles and Seattle, the sunshine and the sheer variety of things to do in LA ultimately won me over. Seattle's charm is undeniable, but the weather... let's just say I prefer year-round warmth.

We spent 2 weeks in both, including the Seattle rain season, and we like both cities. I'm in tech, she's in real estate, and we both have enough savings for a few years in a high-cost city. We're looking to settle long term, eventually buy a house after some years, and live a DINK lifestyle. Here's what I think we gathered. What influenced your decisions to move to LA or away from LA? LA pros: - Hands down the best ethnic food in the US (some people say NYC but I disagree), beats the bay area hands down - Lots of opportunities to explore the arts and pick up new artistic hobbies - Sunny days, easy to stroll outside the house in a T-shirt and sandals without thinking about anything - More "exciting" tech jobs -- outer space, quantum computing, entertainment industry applications - Houses in the middle class range are generally more modern in design look/feel nicer to live in - You get Santa Barbara and San Diego "for free" LA cons: - Traffic -- takes 2+ hours to get across the city - Maniac drivers, I worry about having a car accident on the freeways due to other drivers' behavior - Too hot to hike for half the year - Not many places to experience nature in the city. Concrete jungle. - The "exciting" jobs might not be that stable - CA state tax Seattle pros: - Hands down the best collection of nature in the US, if you include all parts of Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia that are accessible over a 3-day weekend, and lots of smaller parks with lots of green absolutely everywhere. We really loved this - Traffic is not bad, it seemed like we could get from anywhere to anywhere within an hour, usually much less - Stable corporate tech jobs - Drivers are generally nice - You get Vancouver and Portland "for free" Seattle cons: - Food (especially Asian food paled compared to the bay area or LA) - Harder to go out in winter while managing a work schedule due to how early it gets dark - Tech jobs tend to be more on the boring side -- cloud compute, e-commerce, not many crazy exciting things and startups - Houses in the middle class range tend to be run-down looking on average

The weather alone is a huge factor. Think about your lifestyle, do you prioritize outdoor activities year-round? Seattle's beauty is undeniable, but the limited daylight hours in winter can impact your mood and social life. LA's downsides are real (traffic!), but the near-constant sunshine and access to diverse outdoor activities (even if it's beach-centric rather than hiking) might be a better fit for long-term happiness. Consider carefully how much the gloomy weather would impact you both.

Seconding the Academy Museum free day tip, that's a solid addition. One thing the guide doesn't mention is that the Griffith Observatory can get completely overrun on summer weekends, to the point where they close the road to cars. If you're not up for the hike from the bottom, take the DASH Observatory bus from the Vermont/Sunset Metro station, it's 50 cents and drops you right at the door. Also, for a quick beach lunch that's not a tourist trap, the fish tacos at Fishing with Dynamite in Manhattan Beach are worth the short walk from the pier.

one thing the guide doesnt mention is that the getty center has a free shuttle from the parking structure up to the museum, so you dont have to hike the hill unless you want to. also if you go on a weekday morning the gardens are basically empty and the light is perfect for photos. for a quick bite after, the cafeteria is overpriced but the hot dog stand outside the tram stop has decent cheap snacks

honestly the guide is pretty solid but i think theyre sleeping on the food scene in the san gabriel valley. if you have a car and an afternoon, drive out to monterey park for some of the best chinese food in the country. the soup dumplings at din tai fung are famous for a reason but the real hidden gem is the xiao long bao at mei long village just down the street. way less of a wait and just as good. also for a chill evening that's not downtown, the rooftop at the standard on sunset has a great vibe and you can see
