I live in the SELA area so anything relatively close to me would be great (South Central/Florence-Graham/Watts/Huntington Park/South Gate).

The Southeast Cities Food Bank at 7915 S. San Pedro Street in South Central does pop-up distributions that aren't always listed on the main LA Food Bank map. I'd call their office directly on the 23rd to see if they have anything scheduled between the holidays, they sometimes do midweek emergency pickups. Also the Marycrest Manor on 106th Street in Inglewood runs a small pantry on Tuesday mornings that's stayed open during past Christmas breaks.

St. Mary's Food Pantry on 62nd and Hooper usually runs through the holidays, they might have different hours but I've seen them open when others are closed. Also try the Watts Labor Community Action Committee on 108th, they do emergency food distribution and can sometimes get you a box with a couple days' notice. Both are a short bus ride from Florence-Graham if you don't drive.

Check out the LA Food Bank website. They've got a search tool to find pantries near you, should be pretty comprehensive for the SE area.

What's the easiest way to get there on transit from downtown, and does parking fill up if I drive instead? Also is Sunday morning or a weekday evening better for a first visit?

Skip Sunday entirely, go Wednesday night when you can actually park on Vermont without circling.

I'd take the Metro B Line to Vermont/Beverly then the 204 up Vermont, it drops you a block from the spot. Sunday morning fills the lot by 9:30 so drive only if you're early. A weekday evening is calmer for a first visit.
