Is there another emergency number? What can I do?

I witnessed my two neighbors fighting next to our building and one of them had a pipe. My husband and I both tried to call 911 but just had a busy signal. We never got through to a dispatcher. So what do I do if I have another emergency?

honestly the busy signal thing is real and it happens more than people think. one thing that helps is knowing your LAPD division's direct line, like Hollywood is 213-972-2971, because if you're already in their area they can roll units without going through the 911 queue. also flag down any black and white you see rolling, they can radio it in faster than you can dial. for the pipe situation specifically, if its actively swinging thats 911 territory but keep trying, dispatchers do pick up on redials.

You can also text 911 in LA, which sometimes gets through when the voice lines are jammed. Just send the address and what's happening in the first message, no abbreviations, and keep it short. For something like a neighbor with a pipe, if it's already turned violent, LAPD's non-emergency line at 877-ASK-LAPD is worth trying too, though it can be slow.

If someone's swinging a pipe that's assault with a deadly weapon, so keep redialing and say that phrase first when they pick up.

How can I find mobile hot dog vendors for a private event?

These vendors typically operate from portable carts or vehicles at public gatherings. Does anyone have information on how to contact such vendors or recommendations for reliable services?

honestly the SGV has a ton of licensed cart operators who mostly do private stuff now. look up "hot dog cart catering San Gabriel Valley" on Yelp and you'll get a handful that are fully permitted, which matters if your venue needs a health permit on file. expect around $400 to $700 for a few hours plus a per person minimum, usually 50 or so. the ones based in Alhambra and Rosemead tend to be cheaper than Pasadena because they're not paying that rent.

fwiw the county health dept keeps a public list of permitted mobile food operators, its searchable by city on the LA County Public Health site. filter for "pushcart" or "MFF" and you'll get vendors cleared for SGV zip codes, which saves you the headache of a venue asking for paperwork later. also worth checking with the Old Town Monrovia or Alhambra farmers market folks, the carts there are usually booked solid but they know who's free and they'll pass along names. just dont wait till the last week, good ones book out 2 to 3 weeks in teh summer.

You could try hitting up the folks who set up outside Home Depot or the DMV in El Monte on weekends, a lot of those carts are owner operated and they'll do private gigs if you ask. Just walk up and grab a card, they usually have one taped to the cart.
