yeah that's an old story from like 2013 that went viral and people still repeat it. the refrigerated trailer thing was real but it was a temporary measure during the worst of the backlog, not some ongoing crisis. the la city council allocated like $5 million in 2016 to fix this and now all evidence goes to the new crime lab in mission hills which has proper backup power and climate control. the old trailer on 1st street hasn't been used for evidence storage in years
That rumor has been floating around for years but it's not really accurate anymore. The LAPD did have issues with backlogged rape kits and some were stored in a refrigerated trailer outside the old Police Administration Building on 1st Street, but that was more of a temporary fix during a bad period around 2010-2015. The city has since spent millions clearing that backlog and now stores evidence in a proper facility in the Valley with backup generators, not a vulnerable trailer downtown. The last public audit from 2021 showed they had tested over 8,000 kits from that old batch, so the trailer situation is mostly history.
