I applied for a city of la job October, 2023. I started to give up hope when it finally hit a year 2 months ago.

I just got a email asking to report availability for certification. Anyone know how far away an offer may be? Am I close? I'm excited and also the most impatient person ever.

The certification step means you've made it past the initial screening, which is actually the hardest part for City of LA jobs. From here, it really depends on the department and how many people are on the list ahead of you. Some people get an offer in a few weeks, others wait months more. You might want to call the personnel department listed on your application and ask what number you are on the certification list, that will give you a much better idea of your timeline.

honestly, congrats on finally hearing back. city hiring moves at a glacial pace but that certification email is a real sign of life. depending on the dept, you could be looking at anywhere from a few weeks to a few months before an actual offer comes through. if you wanna speed things up, try emailing the hiring contact listed on the email and ask if they have a rough timeline or if there's any paperwork you can get started on now. just keep in mind some departments are way more responsive than others, like DWP moves faster than say the library system from what i've heard

yeah that certification email is a good sign, it means your name actually made it onto the hiring list. from what i've seen, the wait after that can be anywhere from a couple weeks to a couple months depending on how fast the department needs to fill the spot. if you're super impatient like me, try checking in with the contact person on the email after a week or two just to see if they have a timeline, sometimes it helps nudge things along

How can I find mobile hot dog vendors for a private event?

These vendors typically operate from portable carts or vehicles at public gatherings. Does anyone have information on how to contact such vendors or recommendations for reliable services?

honestly the SGV has a ton of licensed cart operators who mostly do private stuff now. look up "hot dog cart catering San Gabriel Valley" on Yelp and you'll get a handful that are fully permitted, which matters if your venue needs a health permit on file. expect around $400 to $700 for a few hours plus a per person minimum, usually 50 or so. the ones based in Alhambra and Rosemead tend to be cheaper than Pasadena because they're not paying that rent.

fwiw the county health dept keeps a public list of permitted mobile food operators, its searchable by city on the LA County Public Health site. filter for "pushcart" or "MFF" and you'll get vendors cleared for SGV zip codes, which saves you the headache of a venue asking for paperwork later. also worth checking with the Old Town Monrovia or Alhambra farmers market folks, the carts there are usually booked solid but they know who's free and they'll pass along names. just dont wait till the last week, good ones book out 2 to 3 weeks in teh summer.

You could try hitting up the folks who set up outside Home Depot or the DMV in El Monte on weekends, a lot of those carts are owner operated and they'll do private gigs if you ask. Just walk up and grab a card, they usually have one taped to the cart.
